Current Employee – been working at Vancity full-time for more than 10 years

Pros- employee benefits are outstanding; positive atmosphere to work in most branches (head office is a lot more political).
- pretty good career opportunities if you work hard and communicate your goals well - lots of tellers move on to being mutual fund advisors and even stock advisers, or move onto lower branch management and from there can continue to climb the ladder.
- people are a lot of fun to work with and mgmt know how to incorporate play at the workplace
- people support each other for the most part, work together as a team

Cons- long-term goals of the organization seem to change and aren't communicated very well despite Executives' efforts
- underlying information systems sometimes a result of political decision-making versus lasting and effective cost/benefit analysis; this results in either complex software that employees avoid to the best of their ability, or slow, incomplete and/or non-integrated databases
- fairly high sales pressure on everyone from teller up to branch manager, investment advisors and insurance agents

Advice to Senior ManagementGet it together with your long-term planning and stick with a plan! Share the corporate plan at commencement but also share regular, honest updates on what's working and what's not.
Be more transparent - people come and go at higher levels of management with no explanations - creates an unstable work environment.

Vancouver, BC (Canada)

Former Employee – worked at Vancity full-time for less than a year

ProsNice social environment at times.

ConsManagement - out of touch with employees.
Not supportive of employees.
Pay attention when our team is working overtime -- all the time to meet your goals.
Not participating in team building social events is frowned upon.
Best company to work for is a sham.
Not all areas are bad, but those that are bad are extremely toxic.
New employees not accepted as easily into culture.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees concerns and take action rather than appearing to care, it would help if you actually stepped in and cared.
