Pros- Good Culture
- Positions are multi-faceted providing strong experience
- Community driven
- Innovative hiring practices
- Strong training

Cons- Some managers appear to be almost brainwashed encouraging staff to sell products in personal situations
- A lot of internal competition to drive sales targets can sometimes devalue customer service
-A lot of cliques form within branches, managers also contribute

Good benefits, perks, and salary

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Vancouver, BC (Canada)

I worked at Vancity full-time

ProsFlexible work schedule and friendly work environment within department. Good company to work for but it also depends on your manager. Good if you have a good manager support but crappy if he/she doesn't give a crap of you. There are annual staff events that brings the entire Vancity organization together.

ConsLimited support from other departments and low morale. I've seen many people were let go by this organization thus created a low morale in the department. Everyone is afraid that they will be next person to be let go.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to front line staff. Sometimes the FSR are busy as hell and the line is super long. Management should help out FSRs if the line is long so the members won't be unhappy. The TV screens can only keep the member occupied for a limited number of minutes.

Great company until you get stuck under a crappy manager

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Vancity full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood culture (for the most part). Year-end bonus/profit sharing incentives. Great health benefit plan. Lots of vacation with lots of sick days, sick days for your kids, sick days for your parents, grief days for death in a family.

ConsSome managers are extremely clueless and try very hard to appear intelligent by using big corporate words, blaming other departments or holding endless meetings that doesn't amount to anything.

Depending on the department it is also very clique-y. If you're not in their clique it's very hard to get into it without brown nosing your way through, or pretend you're interested in conversations you have zero interest in having that's completely non job related.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees; own up to your mistakes; don't pretend you understand something when you don't. Not everyone knows everything, it's OK to not know. To give BS answers is worse than no answer at all.

I have been working at Vancity part-time for more than 3 years

ProsVancity is a great company to work for and have an awesome work culture. They pay a wage on the higher end than most companies in the same field. They do a lot of community involvement and volunteering.

ConsThere is very little room for advancement as most employees never leave, and few positions that open up with a lot of people who apply. Job shadowing or training in a different position may be harder and depends on the branch whether they have the money or time to allow that.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not focus solely on the numbers/sales that your employee does, but also look at developing their potential and giving them a chance based on their overall performance.

Good place to work, inefficient top management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Vancity full-time for more than 10 years

Pros- employee benefits are outstanding; positive atmosphere to work in most branches (head office is a lot more political).
- pretty good career opportunities if you work hard and communicate your goals well - lots of tellers move on to being mutual fund advisors and even stock advisers, or move onto lower branch management and from there can continue to climb the ladder.
- people are a lot of fun to work with and mgmt know how to incorporate play at the workplace
- people support each other for the most part, work together as a team

Cons- long-term goals of the organization seem to change and aren't communicated very well despite Executives' efforts
- underlying information systems sometimes a result of political decision-making versus lasting and effective cost/benefit analysis; this results in either complex software that employees avoid to the best of their ability, or slow, incomplete and/or non-integrated databases
- fairly high sales pressure on everyone from teller up to branch manager, investment advisors and insurance agents

Advice to Senior ManagementGet it together with your long-term planning and stick with a plan! Share the corporate plan at commencement but also share regular, honest updates on what's working and what's not.
Be more transparent - people come and go at higher levels of management with no explanations - creates an unstable work environment.
