I have been working at Vancity (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great people. Great pay

    Cons

Over time more is being expected of employees. Sales targets are getting more difficult

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More shifts need to be given out to part timers. Over flow of calls cause stress on current employees along with the strenuous sales goals... Which are not for commission

I have been working at Vancity full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - excellent vision for making a difference within the community.
    - job security

    Cons

Entry level jobs are well compensated. Positions that require more skill sets and training are under paid. Merit increases are very low - high and low performers receive almost the same increase. Same with bonuses.
The level of nepotism for internal hiring is quite high. This has led to a number of talented employees leaving in recent years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at rewarding top talent through compensation and career development. Deal with employees that are either not performing at necessary levels through coaching or terminating employment. Not allow a abussive behaviour (verbal, mental) from senior leaders.

Very confused organization. Really bad at prioritizing what's important. Policies change like no tomorrow. Bad management in some branches and departments.

I have been working at Vancity full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, annual profit sharing, some unionized departments offer fixed pay increases.

    Cons

Performance reviews are based on sales numbers which does not align with vancity's core values. Over the years Vancity has become so much sales focused that more staff has gone on stress leave in last 4-5 years than the past many decades. Some managers became managers only because the either had good sales numbers or they had good connections, they have no people management skills at all. Career progression is really slow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on your employees and stick to vancity's values instead of competing with big banks.

I have been working at Vancity full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Above average time off, especially at entry level
    - Standard, but very good, health benefits
    - Company has events for staff a couple times a year that are often creative and fun
    - Generally does the right thing
    - Super, super active in many community programs and organizations

    Cons

    - Training is okay, could be improved, probably below average, but not worst
    - Pay is good for the people at the bottom, but not always that competitive in the middle roles
    - Culture is resistant to change, but that can be a good thing sometimes
    - Depending on the office, it can be laid back or hard working

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Review compensation for some roles as they may be outdated and non-competitive
    - Some roles have lower requirements and higher or equal pay, so some roles should be paid less actually
    - Eliminate the bureaucracy to become nimbler so the company can grow
    - Less micro-managing please, so things can get done faster - see "operating at the speed of trust"

I have been working at Vancity full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Comprehensive benefits package - 80% maternity top-up, 12 care days/yr, good salaries, focus on professional development

    Cons

They rely on contract positions too heavily. You can get stuck in one for 5 years without full access to job security or all the benefits. Very traditional organizational structure

    Living wage employer

    Cons

Limited shadowing and career development oppoertunities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within rather than hiring externally
Appreciate loyal staff who are always going above and beyond
Provide more growth opportunities and cross-shadowing
Pay for 100% of tuition reimbursement even if unrelated to current job (but applicable to future position)
