Current Employee - Driver in Philadelphia, PA (US)

I have been working at Waste Management full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Paid weekly, half decent benefits, safety bonuses, there is a good 401k plan. Profit sharing through an employee stock purchase plan.

    Cons

The trucks are falling apart. The drivers write things to be fixed and have a hard time getting them taken care of. Many driver comfort items are overlooked as not safety sensitive. Air conditioning is a big necessity when working in hot humid conditions. If a truck has A/C, it should work.
It seems like everything is a big secret. The communication between the managers and drivers is lacking. Management seems more concerned about the bottom line. The drivers are the face of the company and management needs to do whatever it takes to make sure the drivers are happy. If the drivers are happy, the customer is happy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop worrying about the competitive advantage so much. A happy driver will make much more returns for the company rather than being pressured into going faster and faster all the while trying to be a safe as possible.

I worked at Waste Management full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great Industry. A place full of opportunity for growth. Fantastic benefits!!

    Cons

Too many changes going on all the time with upper management, route supervisors, point of contact.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick to one plan, dont change so many people around. Customers, clients, etc like one contact not a constant change.

Current Employee - Sale & Marketing in Houston, TX (US)

I have been working at Waste Management full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

It's a large company with many disciplines (transportation, logistics, sales, IT) in which someone can develop their career.

    Cons

Frequent, and periodically large, reorgs are highly disruptive and set projects back while good folks end up elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People who have worked at WM for a long time are highly loyal, but that loyalty is constantly challenged by changing priorities and layoffs.

I worked at Waste Management as a contractor

    Pros

Good corporate training for profession sales in Houston. Direct was professional and handled the challenging restructuring at the time well even as he was new too. Regional office is a palace.

    Cons

Tough market area that was losing market share from previous acquisition not tucked in and receiving price increases.
Local office and shop was nasty in appearance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Collaboration with field, corporate and clients for sustainable growth.

I worked at Waste Management full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There were some great supervisors and cared about their employees. Some fun activities to keep the work as fun as it could be. The company was ok, but seemed to be mostly about the money.

    Cons

Supervisors had their hands tied by call center management. Call center employees were treated as low level employees and were rarely considered for anything outside the call center. Many coworkers did not take the job seriously which makes it harder on the rest of the team. Overall it is a tough environment to enjoy!
