They'll grant it, certainly, but not having had occasion to personally experience this, I think it would be deducted from your accrued annual, judging by staff room break chat.
That's about the only good thing they do , and leave you alone
Can get threatened with dismissal if you are AWOL due to a sick parent dying in hospital.
As far as I'm aware it is unpaid leave for bereavements of closer family members only
