The University of Leeds helps its students get in the lead. It is the second-largest university in the UK with more than 30,000 students. The institution offers undergraduate programs in arts and performing arts, biological sciences and medicine, business, education and law, engineering, environment, and math and science. The university is divided into nine faculties, which are further divided into schools, institutes, and centers. Notable alumni include author J.R.R. Tolkien, astronaut Dr. Piers Sellers, and singer Corinne Bailey Rae. The University of Leeds traces its roots to the establishment of Leeds School of Medicine in 1831.

University of Southampton, one of the top 15 research universities in the UK, boasts nearly 25,000 students. The school has six campuses and has more than 20 academic schools awarding degrees in such fields of study as engineering, law, mathematics, and medicine. The school was chartered in 1952 but traces its roots to 1862. The university has long been engaged in fiber-optic research and established the Optoelectronics Research Center in 1989. It is also engaged in ocean and earth science research through its Southampton Oceanography Centre. In addition, it is one of the most entrepreneurial universities in the UK and in the past decade has spun off more than a dozen companies, including SPI Lasers.

The London School of Economics and Political Science (frequently referred to as London School of Economics, or simply LSE) is one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the world.
