What does a Billing Analyst do?

Billing analysts work for a company's accounting department. Through corresponding with clients, they are tasked with ensuring that the company clients are billed correctly, issuing invoices, and overseeing the company revenue intake. Billing analysts coordinate with other departments to ensure sales and orders are correctly billed. They set clients up for billing, issue invoices, and ensure that invoices correspond with their balance sheet reports. They analyze all department procedures and identify opportunities to improve the process.

Billing analysts verify with other departments when orders are fulfilled. They review sales sheets to ensure all sales have been properly billed and to reconcile invoices with balance sheet reports, seeking to resolve any discrepancies they may find. They communicate with clients and other departments and resolve issues. They also provide clarification when necessary. They ensure a client's billing and accounts are set up correctly. According to protocol and maintain updated records of accounts, and they need a degree in accounting, finance, or related fields and previous experience as a billing analyst or in a similar role.

What responsibilities are common for Billing Analyst jobs?
  • Perform and support business to business (B2B) corporate contract billing.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of all customer invoices.
  • Managed assigned payers to ensure all payment data is posted in a timely manner at month end close.
  • Process adjustments as requested by the departments and/or supervisors.
  • Analyze customer contracts and execute accurate setup of billing rules within billing system(s).
  • Perform a variety of analytical functions including the review and management of large data sets to ensure customer billing accuracy and comply with internal controls.
  • Lead and assist with continuous process improvement projects related to billing controls, quality and efficiency, and automation opportunities.
  • Research and resolve complex billing issues utilizing analytical and reporting tools as well as collaborate with cross functional peers.
  • Review contracts for relevant billing provisions and working with contract managers to understand necessary billing requirements.
  • Obtain necessary information and records for research and resolving accounts.
  • Utilize appropriate payer and departmental forms to generate refunds.
  • Reconcile any cost account differences between billing sub ledger and general ledger.
