What does a Product Development Engineer do?

Development engineers identify a company's goals to conceptualize, design, and test a new product or product series. They work in almost every industry and develop products that can vary dramatically. Trom creating mechanical toys to medical devices, development engineers are involved. They conduct research before the planning process begins for a new product by learning more about the target audience, what products are currently on the market, and any relevant issues. Using their research, they innovative products or create new products to fill the needs.

Development engineers build prototypes to show to upper management that persuade them that their design is valid and functional. They work on the manufacturing process’s specifics for a product or series of products, including determining the best materials to construct the product, what manufacturing processes will entail, and techniques to be utilized in the process. They often consult with other engineers and specialists when hoping to create a successful plan. Development engineers need a bachelor's degree in engineering, a professional engineering license, and computer aided design CAD experience.
