What does a Supply Chain Engineer do?

Supply chain engineers analyze, improve, and oversee an organization’s supply chain systems and processes, and design and implement programs to improve the efficiency of those processes. They study the existing infrastructure for supply chain and logistics operations, identifying opportunities for improvements, and design systems that streamline or automate procedures. The goal is to increase productivity, eliminate waste, and cut expenses. They use a variety of software programs and tools, and may also use statistical calculations and data analysis to determine the most efficient routines and strategies.

Supply chain engineers typically have at least a bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, business, or a related field, and a background in supply chain or logistics roles. Proficiency with ERP software programs is helpful. A relevant professional credential such as APICS - CPIM certification is an advantage.
