What does a Teaching Fellow do?

A Teaching Assistant is employed by the school district and is found in schools and classrooms. They work to assist the teacher with daily duty including grading papers, offering additional support to students in small groups. Additionally, a Teaching Assistant will help students in need of additional one-on-one time to master lessons. Many individuals employed as a Teaching Assistant are seeking to become certified teachers.

Depending on the state, certification and education can vary widely. Generally, professional teaching certification is not needed. Individuals working within school systems in any regard are subject to criminal background checks to ensure the safety of all children on campus. An excellent Teaching Assistant will possess skills such as compassion and patience when dealing with children. A positive and creative approach to education is an asset to individuals seeking the position of Teaching Assistant.

  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with the instructor in order to assist in daily lesson plans
  • Aid in preparing materials to be used for projects including art and science
  • Provide individual assistance to children in small groups to ensure an understanding of concepts
  • Strictly adhere to the school's rules and policies
  • Ensure the safety of the students within the classroom, on field trips and throughout the campus
  • Assist teaching in reviewing, grading and recording homework and tests
  • Maintain, observe and assess each student's progress through assessments and be aware of students who need more one-on-one guidance
  • Provide additional assistance to students who have special needs
  • Experience working with children strongly preferred
  • Basic understanding of childhood development and steps to support children of various ages
  • Ability to effectively communicate with teachers and parents regarding student's progress and behavior
  • Strong organizational skills are essential to aid in preparing materials for several daily lesson plans
  • Personal accountability and patience are essential when working with children daily in a classroom environment
  • Ability to prioritize activities quickly and support the teacher in instances that are exceptionally busy
  • Basic writing, math and science skills are necessary to assist in teaching students and answering their questions
  • Ability to manage potentially challenging behavior from students and maintain a professional and patient demeanor
  • Experience fostering positive relationships with children and adults in a learning environment
