Simple. Gold and cobalt (the latter more so for millennials and early gen z) are aimed more at living and lifestyle with a more aggressive focus on daily categories so that you can earn points for travel.
The platinum was always a higher end work/ lifestyle card that was more designed to grant access and focus on categories that mattered to a slightly higher demographic (lounge accesses, invites by Amex, waived green fees for golf, travel perks, status etc.).
Many of the times they banked on you using the platinum for work and then taking them up on a discounted offer for a personal gold. That way you could really turbocharge your earnings on all fronts

Does anyone else cringe a bit when they see a former intern, or similar, have “ex-BCG”, “former Bain”, “PwC alum”, etc. on their LinkedIn headline? I don’t like it generally, and I don’t feel like an intern even counts.
