Former Employee - Canvasser

I worked at CALPIRG full-time for less than a year

Pros

- Great opportunity to learn people/speaking skills - Fairly easy to advance from canvasser to field manager or director - Teaches you how to be persistent after so many rejections

Cons

- Low pay, no benefits - Some people are extremely rude to canvassers - Emotionally exhausting to seem cheerful to strangers all the time - Having to work outside in the heat/cold/rain/dark often... alone

Advice to Management

- Allow people who've graduated to work part-time - Pay your canvassers and directors more!! - Adjust canvassing hours to correlate with the daylight -- as a young woman canvassing alone in... unfamiliar neighborhoods I felt uncomfortable so many times just doing my job.

Former Employee - Organizer

I worked at U.S. PIRG full-time

Pros

Honestly, it was none. Management was highly disorganized.

Cons

Everything. Pay was not good, not worth the job.
