I have been working at Thames Valley Police full-time for more than 5 years
An organisation that tries hard to offer flexibility around childcare as well as being able to develop your career. I’m under no illusion that there will be limitations but I’ve always been flexible... and understand that this must be of mutual benefit to the organisation as well as myself. Staff/management listen and do their best to accommodate, I’ve worked in the private sector and the difference is notable. Like all places there are staff here that like to have a grumble, but they remain here and must do for a reason !
I have seen many of my colleagues leave the department, whilst it would be good to see less leaving they usually do so to advance their careers after obtaining HR experience and in some cases... qualifications funded by TVP, so although listed as a con could also be a positive. I note mention of a “cliquey” atmosphere, personally I have not experienced this. Although, I do see some of people who have worked together for a very long time, under some very difficult internal and external situations, so I understand they may developed relationships, it’s never affected me in performing in my role. ICT is a barrier and causes a lot of frustration, I don’t believe anyone in the Force can be blamed for this, it’s a sad realisation of cuts to the budget. I’d rather work with out-dated ICT than lose good colleagues!
Advice to Management
Continue doing as you are, don’t be afraid to tell those that grumble that they don’t have to stay if they don’t want to, they pull the rest of us down.
