Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer

I worked at Vulcan full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Good opportunities to do a variety of interesting projects. Very good 401(k), and perks like movie night, sports events.

Cons

They are eliminating many in-house tech positions.

Current Contractor - Anonymous Contractor

I have been working at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for more than 3 years

Pros

Passion, mission, breadth of opportunities, excellence of staff. The Foundation is fundamentally an amazing place to work. It has frustrations but so does everywhere.

Cons

Bureaucracy, workload, pressure, internal focus, tendency towards technocratic and process. The Foundation, despite its excellence, can be a frustrating, exhausting place to work that isn't as... innovative as it could, or wants to, be.

Advice to Management

Do less better. Set longer term strategies and don't micro-manage so regularly. Let people do their jobs.
