Does Abcam have a pension plan?

Pros

Some of the friendliest team mates I've worked with. The work is interesting Really approachable managers (CEO replies to every message), not hierarchical Opportunities for travel in the right job - they have people across the world Pay has got a lot better. Share benefits are good. Flexible on working from home (if you're in the right job) Great social committee

Cons

We're all just waiting for the new office as the current ones are really old Lots of worry about travel to the new office Growing a lot and sometimes hard to know what all the new people are doing Pension isn't great

Advice to Management

Keep going on improving things. Don't become another boring corporation.

How are senior leaders perceived at Abcam?

Pros

From the day I started, I have felt welcomed, by the company as a whole, and by the people and functions I'm working directly with. All of the exec leadership team are incredibly approachable, and so are the functional leaders and managers. There is no feeling of hierarchy or that you can't say what you really think in meetings or at lunch or wherever. In fact peoples' opinions are genuinely welcomed and if people have a different opinion there is a culture of discussing it from both perspectives. It's very refreshing. So far in my first 3 months I've not seen any cross-functional fighting; everyone is very used to discussing challenges in an open way - maybe because there are lots of scientists there is a very collaborative vibe. I also like the way employees are treated as people; there are lots of extra-curricular activities and adhoc groups you can join. Finally the workforce is I would say relatively young, but even old fogeys like me are welcomed :)

Cons

None really. I'm really glad I made the move

All of the exec leadership team are incredibly approachable, and so are the functional leaders and managers.

How are the career development opportunities at Abcam?

Pros

I write this during COVID19 which has shown Abcam to be just as I expected, a supportive, action oriented, collaborative working environment working globally to support all sites. I have worked at several offices across the world for various companies, the office at Discovery Drive is fantastic thought out working space and the best I have been employed at. From a career perspective, I have already seen internal promotions and career progression within both commercial and scientific roles, there is also investment in training and development across the business.

Cons

Car parking onsite is the only con. However, the walk from the local park and ride is good exercise and only takes 20 mins.

What kind of career opportunities exist at Abcam?

Pros

Informal, friendly atmosphere to all sites - it's an innovative team with good people and managers who care about their teams Has retained much of the spirit and pace of a small company whilst undoubtedly becoming more established and "professional" Opportunities to work with other sites and countries (some jobs involving travel) Nice office in Cambridge with great labs and social space No shortage of projects and groups you can get involved with if you want to Hygiene factors are good - free fruit, decent coffee, lots of social activities pre-covid Lots of opportunity for growth both within current roles and if moving elsewhere in the company

Cons

Always a lot of work to do (though what company is there not?) Some of the lab jobs won't suit everybody, especially those coming from academic backgrounds who can struggle with the pace The structures change a lot and sometimes there are too many managers.

Advice to Management

The culture is what makes Abcam special. Protect it, because if we lose it, we lose a great deal of what makes us who we are.

Lots of opportunity for growth both within current roles and if moving elsewhere in the company
