How are the career development opportunities at Ably?

Pros

Challenging and varied role with lots of exposure to various parts of the business. An exciting period of growth at the business with a genuine feeling of contribution and involvement in driving this. Great company culture! Opportunities for personal growth and lot's of team days, quirky events etc.

Cons

Lots changed/changing over the next few months - so it will be interesting to see how culture/company adapts and evolves with this. Not really a con, more of an unknown.

Advice to Management

Maintain feel of the company and continue to keep staff updated!

What kind of career opportunities exist at Ably?

Pros

At Ably you're given responsibility from the get-go. You're trusted to get on with your work, while at the same have access to a great workplace culture with a management team who genuinely cares about employee growth and experience. As a result, there's a really healthy feel to the team. Working here currently involves wearing a few different hats, and the role itself can be challenging. This is a great way to learn new skills and feel like you're tangibly developing in your career. The company is small enough that your opinion feels heard and can influence the direction of your role.

Cons

The learning curve can be steep if you don't have a technical background! But the opportunities for growth are great, and it's truly a privilege to gain insight into highly technical aspects of the business. We're in a 'middle bit' of growth and only just starting to put scalable processes in place. But being a part of this and getting a real say in the company's development is an amazing feeling.

How do employees feel about their professional development opportunities at Ably?

Pros

- The people working at Ably are brilliant. The company attracts a range of characters making it very easy to fit in. - A company that encourages learning and personal development. - Lots of social activities, even when everyone is working remotely. - The CEO has the drive to take Ably to unlimited heights. - Ably is actively building its own and contributing to existing developer communities. - Ably seems to attract a lot of interest from investors, which is always a good sign.

Cons

Being a start-up, Ably is still finding its way in some regards.

Advice to Management

I had a blast - keep doing what you're doing.

How are senior leaders perceived at Ably?

Pros

1) At Ably I've consistently found that I'm given the freedom and autonomy I need to do really good work. You have a high level of control over what you work on, how you prioritize it, and usually own projects from start to finish. But you are expected to deliver on your responsibilites. I find this great because there's little if any micro management. 2) This goes for the whole company so it creates a high-energy, collaborative, and actually really fun work environment. It's also nice to work in a tech company with a somewhat mixed set of demographics and quite a good gender balance. 3) The work itself is interesting, varied, challenging, and can touch all aspects of the company. If you have skills outside your core role you can have quite the interesting work week. Ably solves hard, complex problems as a company and it's cool to see the interesting (and actually useful) things companies build on Ably. 4) Work/life balance is good despite high-growth mode. Ably is the only company I've worked at (out of many) that offers a truly flexible work environment across remote and on-site without hindering communication, collaboration, and execution. 5) There's plenty of team events and after work social activities if you want them. And who can complain about free beer and snacks in the office? This is quite the gushing review but Ably is genuinely a great place to work.

Cons

1) As the company rapidly scales there's the normal teething issues of growing a company and its employee count: putting scalable processes in place and making sure the culture doesn't change as the teams grow. But the CEO and senior management are doing a great job focusing on this. 2) The office can sometimes be a bit noisy. But new offices in the next couple of months will solve this.

Advice to Management

Keep up the good work with the collaborative/inclusive company culture, the truly flexible work environment, and continue to clearly communicate the company and product vision.
