Pros

CTM has grown and evolved a unique work culture over the years I have worked here. However, co-operation, openness and mutual support have always remained a part of the DNA of the culture, as the business has grown to the size it is today. The environment is, as you'd expect from a market leader, very fast-paced at times, but the variety of work you can get exposed to and the ability to both engage in many aspects of the business and be allowed develop into new roles, is a particular facet of working here, that has kept me at this place for over a third of my working life. In recent years the Graduate and Apprentice schemes have proved fantastic additions, if you're early in your career, this is a fantastic place to both learn and succeed quickly. On-site facilities are great and whilst there aren't quite so many team-level celebrations and fun things as there was a few years ago, there are good efforts to treat staff well, build positive cultures and foster a sense of fun whilst doing it too.

Cons

Never seemed to manage significant organisational change well. I've never worked for any company that has done this well in the past, but having been through a few now, with different goals and different management teams, it always comes with a disproportionate degree of disruption and staff disgruntlement. Slow to reward achievement and long service, both financially and through promotion from within, without some serious encouragement. Partly personal observation, but have lost several colleagues over the years as a result of them being openly discounted from succession planning for no legitimate reasons.

Pros

The people are incredible Real community spirit Good processes and emphasis on automation Range of languages and tech to work on Flexible working

Cons

This review is specifically about Compare the Market, part of BGL Group. Executive Leadership make decisions behind closed doors, and announce to all employees minutes after scheduling a meeting for it. Forward you to line managers about it when they know just as much as you do. Unapologetic, tone deaf executives asking people to be excited about the future of the business whilst t the same time, people are being made redundant. Layers of management being removed, whilst remodelling other roles to absorb their responsibilities into multiple places. Comes across as a cost-cutting exercise as opposed to removal of superfluous roles. There is a general feeling that the executive leadership are not here to look out for employee's wellbeing, but purely for the business benefit. Post COVID, there is an overwhelming sense of expectation that people should return to the office up to 50% of the time. No avenue of approach to change contract to be fully remote. No sense of trust from leadership that we can get the job done fully remotely, even though we have done so successfully throughout the pandemic. As such there is a grand exodus of many long-term employees from the business wanting to find more accommodating and forward-thinking employers. There is a great wealth of knowledge in the business to learn from as a more junior engineer, however you may find career progression beyond senior engineer will pull you away from tech and code quite quickly.

Advice to Management

Care about your employees more, and appeal to their humanity, not merely the business benefit of your actions. Trust your employees to get the job done the way that is comfortable for them, not you!

Events
As part of our recent Purpose Week, we ran our 2nd #hackathon event and it was amazing... everyone involved absolutely loved it 😍 But, we hear you say, What’s a 'Hackathon'? So, the official line is: “A Hackathon, also known as a codefest, is a social coding event that brings computer programmers and other interested people together to improve upon or build a new software programme”. For us, it was the perfect opportunity to bring together colleagues from across the business to work in teams and provide solutions to one of three scenarios where we could help our customers even more... and what a fantastic job they did!! Check out our brilliant teams in the video... it's collaboration at its best!

Employee Story
Our colleague vision is for Compare the Market to be the place of opportunity... and especially true for career development so that every colleague is able to drive their own career journey. We are passionate about 3 key areas - personal development for all, technical & skills development and leadership development. We took the time to catch up with Ellie, one of our Software Engineers, to find out about her career development journey since joining us a graduate and whether or not everything we promised in those early days has actually been delivered for her.
