Does Compare The Market have a pension plan?

Pros

A few brilliant people both in management and in tech who are really well prepared and who try hard to keep a positive feeling among the teams. Specifically, the Martech team was just lovely to work with - lots of people who want to do the right thing in the right way. The offshore guys in Minsk are very strong technically and very easy to work with. Good work-life balance and flexibility around working patterns. Good benefits around pension, work from home furniture, solid laptops and good medical cover.

Cons

During 2021, a lot of management changes affected a lot of the areas of the business - new CEO/CTO. A lot of middle management left - which in turn made a lot of others leave as well. Upper management should not ridicule anyone in public calls - there was one such case which was described in a previous review which I can confirm as being real. There was not even an apology from the CTO, which should have come immediately. During my stay over a year there, I had at least 10 colleagues leave within my team. That is a ridiculous number for any team - and it slowly erodes team cohesion, team spirit and the feeling of a common purpose.

Advice to Management

Understandably, every company goes through restructuring efforts, but they can be done in a way that is less disruptive. Work out how to keep valuable people and stop them leaving. They are the most valuable assets of the company - and some of them are very good indeed. Do more to keep them, don't replace them with short term contractors which come and go as often the rain in London.

Does Compare The Market offer a wellness program?

Pros

A great sense of team and a focus on developing ways to engage with each other collaboratively and openly. Benefits and wellbeing provision is strong. Great buildings and working environment onsite, whilst having the opportunity to work from home on a hybrid basis.

Cons

Recent leadership changes have had an impact, but new inspiring leaders are on board and already driving a positive future for us and our customers

Keep listening and talking to your colleagues - make changes where needed and embrace the positive

How are senior leaders perceived at Compare The Market?

Pros

Some truly awesome people work here, some are really top of their game, unfortunately, the number of them is dwindling rapidly. Aleksandr's dressing gown is surprisingly comfy.

Cons

Compare The Market was a really fantastic company to work for under the previous board, I had no reason to ever want to leave and worked there for many years. You could forgive the tight reins of the parent company BGL because the culture was brilliant and it was a lot of fun. The new CEO arrived and all but one of the board jumped ship and new appointments were made. Over the last six months, they have irreversibly trashed the culture and made it an awful place that could not be more different. The photos on here are very very old. CEO (ex-Test & Trace) looks set to destroy the company. A very clever smiling villain will preach about maintaining an excellent culture that he never experienced (appointed during lockdown) while simultaneously allowing it to be totally and irreversibly destroyed. Operating costs are being driven down and down while profits are still high. Presumably, a sale is inbound soon. If you work in tech, expect your job to move to the Belarus office where wages are significantly lower. Some senior managers are very unprofessional and this is accepted as being OK, they will berate lower grade staff publically and show absolutely no leadership skills whatsoever. Ask about the gender balance in Tech at the moment, relive the 1950s. The family feel which existed through the company before is gone, and only really continues inside some individual teams. The meerkats being in our blood and our being our currency is a thing of the past. Except to be addressed by The Board™ if you are lucky, otherwise it will be one of the hand wringing minions who seem to be multiplying at an alarming rate. Tech claims to be Agile but isn't really as too many red-tape bottlenecks exist for fast and continuous delivery. FCA regulations enforce much of this but some processes are just painful. Without asking anyone, senior management decides Tech is "too Agile" so get a consultancy in to presumably make us just the right amount of Agile. Money is spent appointing a consultant agency to advise CTM how to spend less money on consultant agencies. You might be able to work from home, you might not, CEO says one thing, CTO says another, HR says another. All smoke and mirrors. If you question it expect to have the boys round, your disappearance quickly papered over and your reputation torn down as a warning to others. Contracts only work one way. Expect to receive threats about breaching your end of the bargain while they break theirs. Wrongful dismissal cases are cheap and cheerful for a multi million pound company. Things shouldn't be this way. Senior management often try and compare CTM with Google, Apple, and Spotify (apparently they came to us for advice). Expect groundhog day if you are there long enough. New business ideas rarely get anywhere, they are simply chopped up, rehashed and presented as the next great thing by the latest fall guy every couple of years. Suddenly closed down the office permanently with no warning in the middle of the pandemic, then wanted everyone back in a shared office a fraction of the size. Total disregard for that being CTMs home. Discussed on the side alongside (unrelated) redundancies and so naturally worried staff. The company has remained extremely profitable throughout, no bonus though because you should "think yourself lucky you have a job". Salary is acceptable for Peterborough, but £20-40k less than market averages. Everyone who left recently got a significant pay jump. Attitude to staff retention is "the grass isn't always greener, you'll be back".

Advice to Management

Live your values: Preaching D&I while publically ridiculing mid-level female engineers then quietly ending their employment because it's easier than answering her questions isn't a good look. Neither is being called out for supporting right-wing news outlets and then doing absolutely nothing about it because morals are now rated lower than profits. Be honest when addressing problems: Lying about company policies and then immediately ending the employment of staff who produce proof that contradicts you is probably not a sustainable business model. Filtering staff questions in meetings to hide the problems doesn't magically fix them. Present a unified message: Having a very management-heavy structure but without everyone giving out the same message isn't just madness, it's chaos. Blaming staff for not understanding your ideas has never in the history of mankind helped build a good culture. Just throwing wobblers and going for insults isn't constructive. Take responsibility for your actions: Removing two critical levels of staff with absolutely no concrete plan for a transition. Blaming redundancies on a staff survey result, then claiming it's only a trial, then crediting a leaving exec with the mess proves that you don't. You employ highly intelligent staff and they see straight through this. Learn and iterate: the company is older than just your tenure, packaging up "Ops Model" as a new idea, and introdurcing Jira and Confluence as the new and exciting, while many teams have been working this way for years shows that you are so out of touch with how the company runs its offensive. Many teams have ironed out all the problems already if you could be bothered to look. Waffle won't pay the bills: "meerkat your life" , "technicolour laser focused precision", "be more furry", "leave well", "locate for your day". None of this vacant nonsense which is regurgitated perpetually will. Intentionally hiding behind ambiguity fools less people than you think it does. Cutting down a world-class tech team to the absolute lowest common denominator will help you in the short term only. Value your staff: Not just the ones who spend hours on end in meetings paraphrasing each other, you'll miss them when they're gone (unless you sell the company).

Some senior managers are very unprofessional and this is accepted as being OK, they will berate lower grade staff publically and show absolutely no leadership skills whatsoever.

The benefits and rewards packages are unlike any other company I have worked for, with employees being incredibly well cared for on top of a great salary. Career progression is important and CtM are always keen to promote from within, with every employee having the opportunity to set their own development plan with clear goals on how to achieve their next promotion or desired role. Recognition for strong performing employees is always given, even from the top of the chain.
