What is working from home like at Compare The Market?

Pros

A few brilliant people both in management and in tech who are really well prepared and who try hard to keep a positive feeling among the teams. Specifically, the Martech team was just lovely to work with - lots of people who want to do the right thing in the right way. The offshore guys in Minsk are very strong technically and very easy to work with. Good work-life balance and flexibility around working patterns. Good benefits around pension, work from home furniture, solid laptops and good medical cover.

Cons

During 2021, a lot of management changes affected a lot of the areas of the business - new CEO/CTO. A lot of middle management left - which in turn made a lot of others leave as well. Upper management should not ridicule anyone in public calls - there was one such case which was described in a previous review which I can confirm as being real. There was not even an apology from the CTO, which should have come immediately. During my stay over a year there, I had at least 10 colleagues leave within my team. That is a ridiculous number for any team - and it slowly erodes team cohesion, team spirit and the feeling of a common purpose.

Advice to Management

Understandably, every company goes through restructuring efforts, but they can be done in a way that is less disruptive. Work out how to keep valuable people and stop them leaving. They are the most valuable assets of the company - and some of them are very good indeed. Do more to keep them, don't replace them with short term contractors which come and go as often the rain in London.

How is the work/life balance at Compare The Market?

Pros

Great work life balance and flexibility Strong brand and customer purpose Culture encourages people to be themselves at work Management support for career progression A company with all the right intentions to improve the life of their customers by helping them save money and for their people to do meaningful and challenging work

Cons

Benefits policies, although not bad, could be more competitive with what's available in today's market Tendency to re-prioritise too often which means the goal posts shift a lot. It is a dynamic environment so this can happen but it makes delivery challenging Trying to be agile but a lot of work to do on that front

Advice to Management

Prioritisation needs to be more consistent and governance forums are starting to lack intent and decisive actions Review benefits to attract top talent Encourage more responsibility for lower levels to make decisions as they are closer to the customer

What is overtime like at Compare The Market?

Pros

Compare the Market pay market rate salaries and genuinely care about their staff. The culture is not overly stressful and they don't expect more than you can give. If you manage your time well it means not working crazy overtime, and being able to leave work at work. The line management in my experience is very good and they care about your progression.

Cons

There are some barriers to progression unfortunately, like waiting for opportunities and not knowing exactly what goals to hit. Recent changes have not been handled well, but the company has realised this and is making effort to make it a good place to work again.

If you manage your time well it means not working crazy overtime, and being able to leave work at work.
