How are the career development opportunities at Defra?

Pros

Lots of flexibility about working patterns and locations, good pay for public sector, staff generally friendly, opportunities for career progression if you work out how to 'play the game', potential for interesting and rewarding work

Cons

Debra has expanded massively since the Brexit referendum and hasn't coped well with the influx of people, many have been assigned roles that don't fit their skills. The hotdesking feels a bit soullless. And all the disadvantages of large civil service organisations: having to be neutral about the topics you're working on, huge bureaucracy, constant sense of others scheming their way up career ladders.

Advice to Management

Have a better way of matching new intake to roles (offer a choice?), don't employ project managers who don't properly contribute to teams.

What is the feeling of job security at Defra?

Pros

Meaningful work, even as a junior researcher I felt I was having an impact. People were all very welcoming, kind and helpful. Very knowledgable colleagues, but felt little hierarchy and even senior civil servants felt accessible and gave their time to help where needed. Good pay. Environmentally conscious organisation. Civil Service benefits. Flexible working hours.

Cons

Some colleagues were significantly underpaid in comparison to private sectors jobs doing the same work. Oftentimes, job contracts are only for 2 years. A lot of changing of colleagues as people flit between jobs a lot in the civil service.
