There is no carreer growth for local staff. HR has a if you don’t like it leave attitude.

How are promotions handled at Foreign and Commonwealth Office?

Pros

+ Salary is good for Malaga area + Good holiday (needed with the unsociable hours)

Cons

- Micro-management: timed for everything you do. Timed how long you spend away from the phone ie going to the toilet. ‘Phone availability of at least 80%’ is not true you will be expected to be in your seat at all times. Break times are dictated to you. Management style is control rather than trust in employees. - Nepotism - employment and any promotions are reserved for family, friends and neighbors along the costa. - Disposable employees- ‘Like it or lump it attitude’ no interest in your wellbeing or improving the conditions. The office is filthy and dingy. Don’t expect them to value you. Huge staff turnover. - Management are unpredictable and often flip out in front of the team, instead of taking people to one side and providing constructive feedback. This management style makes you feel on edge. - No opportunities for development- at best you may be able to put your phone on busy to do e-learning. Don’t expect to work your way up here.

Advice to Management

- Management need to go on a management course and learn about constructive feedback. - Explore and act upon high staff turnaround, try to improve working environment and develop employees skills. - Hire a more diverse workforce rather than the ‘Karens’ from the costa - Pay more for working ungodly hours - Invest in a consultant than can assist with creating a workable rota

- Nepotism - employment and any promotions are reserved for family, friends and neighbors along the costa.
