How are the career development opportunities at Garrison Technology?

Pros

+ Friendly work atmosphere + Interesting technical challenges + Good training budget + Company puts in a lot of effort to make sure everyone has a fun time

Cons

- Flat structure so little opportunity to progress within the company. You can grow without your team but unlikely to grow out of your team. - You can ask for specific flexible working arrangements, but the general rule for everyone isn't very flexible. There's a core hours approach but it doesn't roll over day by day, so the most you can do to tailor your hours is shift your start and end time for a given day. - It's a one product company, so if you're looking for a place to get really involved in designing a new product, this isn't the place. But if that doesn't matter, it's great.

Advice to Management

Keep going as you are, scale the company responsibly making sure the employees are at the heart of the decisions you make. Personally I would like to see a more flexible approach to hours, being able to roll over hours from one day to the next, still with a core hours approach. Trust your team to get the work done, rather than expecting them to do a set number of hours per day.

How do employees feel about their professional development opportunities at Garrison Technology?

Pros

- Flexible working hours - Great social aspect (work events at least once every two to three weeks) - Management are friendly, approachable and great mentors - Deep tech stack, plenty of roles and job rotation if requested - Fascinating IP and range of products to work on - Mixed seating plan so you're not constrained to working / sitting with your team - Encourage training and personal development

Cons

- Fairly flat structure, a "Software Engineer" is only two steps away from Head of Engineering. Could be in a role for a while before any chance of a promotion. Mainly due to start-up nature. Your role within your team and your project work increases with difficulty and responsibility as you progress - creating a sense of seniority within your team, but not throughout the company

What is the feeling of job security at Garrison Technology?

Pros

Garrison is a small-to-medium sized company that are getting better and better at ensuring their employees needs are met. My manager is great at understanding my strengths and my goals, assigning me work that I'll enjoy as well as help me grow. I've found Garrison to be largely a warm and welcoming place to work, with a wholesome social culture that includes regular, interesting events from summer sports days to immersive theatre. We have a newly done up office now which is also quite nice, open and airy with decent amenities and well-planned / decorated inside. Alongside a Social committee, there is a Sustainability committee, and an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee, which are constantly active and implementing good initiatives. The company has an open atmosphere and make employees feel involved and aware of its high level strategies through regular, company-wide stand ups. The same meetings provide an opportunity for people to put forward questions and suggestions. During Covid-19, Garrison has supported its employees in working from home, still striving to maintain the open culture that makes it so great (now with inventive virtual socials and standups!) I've made great friendships here and maintain contact even though we're not in the office, and genuinely look forward to being back.

Cons

From my albeit incomplete knowledge of the experience of other employees, I believe there is room for improvement in terms of supporting people for whom extenuating factors are affecting their work life. I don't mean things like childcare, which are well understood circumstances, but rather issues like mental health. This isn't at all a Garrison-specific behaviour as I know many companies will be worse at this kind of thing, but nonetheless it's a point that can be addressed (and I understand it is in fact already being addressed with new manager training etc). The salary at Garrison is decent but I believe there are higher offerings out there, which would be pretty much the only factor that could persuade me to move roles in the future!

What are some insights into the strategy or vision at Garrison Technology?

Pros

+ Amazingly intelligent and friendly people - the teams at Garrison are some of the most capable people I've had the privilege of working with and yet there is never a stupid question. Everyone is always willing to help. + A great product I can really get behind - what Garrison is doing goes beyond just a product. From a marketing perspective it's incredibly exciting to be working with a company that is a real thought leader with a product that is game-changing. + A wonderful work ethic and attitude to growth and development - There's a really nice team spirit at Garrison, which helps support a healthy attitude to work. + A very supportive and trustworthy senior management team

Cons

- Slightly unexciting office compared to other London startups. As a company heavily invested in building a great product and bringing it to market, the priority is not on having a swanky building with pool tables and prosecco on tap. - As we grow as a company there are some teething problems related to going from a very flat structure to an inevitable degree of hierarchy and related to the development of processes that until now had been unnecessary.

Advice to Management

Continue supporting your teams' personal and professional growth. A lot of effort is being put into making sure the company grows at a manageable and healthy rate and I'd hope to see this continue.
