How are the career development opportunities at Haines Watts?

Pros

Really enjoying my role. Varied interesting clients and cases. A great group of people to work with. I really appreciate the positive reinforcement received from colleagues and superiors. I feel that it has been a good fit for me and am pleased to be part of the family and see a positive future here with a great opportunity to continue to progress my career.

Cons

Was difficult to get to grips with new systems and procedures. Whilst the staffing structure is great for providing opportunities it is somewhat different to my former employer’s and a little more explanation of the roles as part of the on-boarding process would have been useful.

Advice to Management

Give new starters some training on the IT systems and clear instructions on procedures. As part of the on-boarding process give more details on the staff structure and roles within the business

I feel that it has been a good fit for me and am pleased to be part of the family and see a positive future here with a great opportunity to continue to progress my career.

What kind of career opportunities exist at Haines Watts?

How are promotions handled at Haines Watts?

Pros

Ground staff are generally nice and friendly - we are all in the same boat and all know how bad it is, so the camaraderie is there.

Cons

- Toxic work place from the top down - If a client doesn't provide correct information/support for the audit the expectation is to just "get the audit done regardless" so the accounts can be signed ASAP, as profit is all that matters - Open affairs committed at after work events - Work place bullying - Unlawfully firing people for no good reason - Not performing timely background checks on people they hire - Total disregard for COVID regulations i.e. meetings taking place with zero social distancing and a desperate need to have people in the office (because they don't trust anyone) and if you do not come in, they find a reason to sack you - People take their masks off and stop social distancing as soon as they get into the office and there are no repercussions (other than catching covid) - People who were unwell with covid have felt like they have had to attend the office and then subsequently tested positive which has caused a lot of stress for vulnerable staff members - Making people they don't like "redundant" and then rehiring for that exact role (not legal) - Absolutely no chance of getting a promotion - Very little audit training for the graduate trainees is provided (other than going to college) which makes life more difficult for seniors/managers as the trainees need hand-holding on every job and cannot use their own judgement because they have not been provided with any standardised training - Ok salary, but no other benefits of significance, probably one of the most basic packages you could get

Advice to Management

Stop forcing people to go to clients and come into the office during the peak of a pandemic. Set up a series of training courses to make sure the trainees know the fundamentals of audit Revise the ethical standards set out by the ICAEW because you clearly do not adhere to them Get some respect for the people who work for you

What is the feeling of job security at Haines Watts?

Pros

Study was paid for and study leave was given in the run up to exams. Good work/life balance as overtime was rarely expected.

Cons

Little room for development, focus was on hiring external staff rather than trying to train and develop existing staff. Long term issue of managers being rude and lacking empathy, resulting in high staff turnover. Too many partners, associate partners and managers for size of company, leading to micromanagement of lower level staff. Appraisals were rare.
