How are the career development opportunities at Immunocore?

Pros

Scientists supporting scientists, some great lower level managers fighting for their teams, real passion for the research, interesting technology

Cons

No visible career progression, unclear restructure, empty promises from senior management about pay & promotion, losing talented people, hostile & patronising response to constructive feedback especially from CEO, not enough resource (technicians, facilities, etc.) to support scientists, morale is low

Advice to Management

Actually listen - stop being on the defensive & making such a hostile environment that nobody wants to actually speak the truth

How are senior leaders perceived at Immunocore?

Pros

Although the mass hiring process was extreme, it did in fact pull in some of the most fantastic scientists in the field, which enabled an engaging, dynamic, collaborative work environment. Without this, the company wouldn’t have made the progress it did in the last 2 years. It wasn’t the mass hiring that was the problem, it was the lack of strategic planning before hand, to correctly assign where groups did/ did not need to expand, with clearly defined goals and objectives.

Cons

Shocking lack of knowledge of Immunocore’s technology and application and general immunology in relevant disease areas held by new senior management that take no responsibility for their ignorance or mistakes. This coupled with their unwillingness to listen and take comments on board has led to friction, and impacted quality of presented data. More knowledge held by middle management, who are consistently ignored. With senior management taking credit and praise for results generated by others that they had no involvement in. This has created a toxic, territorial work place, that in fact puts up barriers instead of breaking down silos. No longer leaders in the field as competitive companies are now advancing and overtaking Immunocore. Company no longer has integrity or respect for its employees. This is something that the company used to be upheld for. It’s a real shame to see such an amazing company crash. Employees/ groups that really excelled the science in R and D over the past couple of years were unfortunately not recognised, and instead credit for their work was taken again by senior management to present to investors and the board.

Advice to Management

I have no advice to senior management, as it would be ignored and of no use. To the board members though, a once buoyant vibrant company has now been ruined. Think careful about choice of senior management, and understand where the real break throughs come from.

What are some insights into the strategy or vision at Immunocore?

Pros

Great people, great scientists with a very broad and solid knowledge.

Cons

This company had a great environment. Some years ago people felt recognized and enjoyed working here. The science was great and people too but recently it lost completely its direction. Very bad decisions were made, people don’t enjoy working here anymore, the work environmet in awful, there is no senior leadership and the structure just doesn’t make sense. They are not interested in retaining talent just want to keep junior people. It is a big mess which is a shame because this company had a huge potential but now it is completely ruined.

Advice to Management

Take a moment to think about what you are doing. Know your people, who can do what. Don’t fire just based on titles and numbers. Hopefully it is not too late to make things right.
