What kind of career opportunities exist at MDRC?

Pros

-Opportunity to work in a collaborative, fast-paced work environment -Colleagues are passionate about their work and there is room for growth within the organization -Friendly working environment (Friday Parties) -MDRC is the type of organization where one can constantly learn and grow -Exposure and opportunity to collaborate with other national partners in equity-driven work

Cons

-Lack of diversity -Can sometimes feel elitist and very hierarchical -Slow to promote -Lack of professional development opportunities

Advice to Management

-Invest time and money for employees to learn and grow within their role

-Exposure and opportunity to collaborate with other national partners in equity-driven work

Does MDRC have any sort of mentoring programme?

Pros

Working with super intelligent, thoughtful and committed individuals Interesting research projects and can be challenging at times (which is a good thing because you'll never be bored) Organization offers a mentoring program for junior staff and graduate school panels for staff Reputable organization, experience looks great on a resume Organization is moving to become more inclusive and be more diverse Beautiful and collaborative office space

Cons

Management looks different across the board and across different policy areas Lack of transparency in promotion processes and policies Surprisingly there are a lot of missed opportunities to learn across the different policy areas Work-life balance is not a priority here and senior staff do not do a great job at modeling this

Advice to Management

Provide more support and training to managers to help them develop others Invest in the development and growth of all staff, especially junior staff Be intentional about fostering connections within staff and check morale from time to time. Projects can be challenging. Gauge staff project interests, where possible

How are promotions handled at MDRC?

Pros

co-workers are amazing people mentoring program diverse work opportunities for growth encouraged

Cons

all pros are subject to variety based on your managers/supervisors promotion happens slowly work can be siloed if management does not encourage exploring

Let entry-level employees explore interests.

Certain employees aren’t around to help Take forever to help with computer issues Fake environment of people who pretend to care.

Advice to Management

Be mindful of how to let someone go because you don’t know what situation they are in.
