Pros

Staff discount is 20% plus friends and family benefits Flu jab vouchers Nice department managers Good place to work if you don’t have much experience or are looking for a job alongside studies

Cons

Only ever overtime during school breaks because a lot of the staff book time off due to having children If you don’t have kids you’ll be put mainly on night shifts or weekends Seem to have favourites regarding who they give extra hours to, whilst most sales assistants and temps are on 4 hour contracts the same people seem to get 16+ hours on the rota Lack of communication Head manager is rude and expects too much from staff

Advice to Management

Improve on communication, keep staff in the loop. Change the rota to ensure equality in over time and don’t keep putting the same people on the late shifts. Also it would be nice to have some notice before putting on extra shifts without ensuring we can cover them first

Pros

The discount is useful, most customers are really sweet and the staff are to some degree friendly.

Cons

Very little training Confusing rota Give you more shifts without notice Easy password to get through to the Staff Only Has a go at staff for customers not having a matalan card. Pays minimum wage and expects us to do everything From recovery to the tills, to the stock room and delivery Complains about the competition all the time and doesn't ask if we have any ideas to help. One single idea is not enough to persuade them to do anything. You get told that at Matalan you are part of a family when they treat you nothing as the sort. They gave me a letter for a meeting to review my contract and when I opened up it the meeting had already gone In a review meeting with a manager they told me I wasn't getting any amazing feedback on tills, had heard nothing about my work on everything else. No feedback had been given to me until this point. Then patronised me for turning up at the wrong shift from their confusing rota and they didn't even call me. (At least I got the day right, they couldn't even get week right)

Advice to Management

Text or email us our shifts. Style out a new rota Give temps or new people weekly feedback Remember if you didn't have any staff you wouldn't have a Matalan. It's not just the customers.
