What kind of work are different roles expected to perform at National Museums Scotland?
Pros
Other VEAs intelligent and friendly. Take this job if you're happy doing the exact same thing every day, with no change, or expectation of personal growth and development.
Cons
No possibility for transfer or consideration for other positions that become available. Not much expected/required from you as an individual. A lot of micro managing. Exactly the same tasks day to day with the odd exception of an museum event, with little preparation/briefing given prior to event. Shift pattern unsociable and too straining, eg, a rarity to have 2 days off in a row, shift pattern is commonly working 5 days, off 1, working 4 days, off 1, repeat. So quickly the job will become your life, like it or not. Managers are a lottery, many are friendly professional and understanding, others can be highly strung, controlling and borderline abusive.
Advice to Management
Consider current staff for openings and opportunities. Such a high staff turn over is down to the fact that current staff feel undervalued and overlooked. All staff are educated, capable and eager to have some kind of participation and responsibility. Encourage personal development, insist on managers carrying out their professional role of inspiring their colleagues and not oppressing them.
