What is the company culture like at Pacific Gas and Electric?

Pros

Location in San Ramon is within a nice office park.

Cons

PG&E is a cesspool of chaos & incompetent, spineless and unprofessional management. The employees and contract employees are incompetent and unprofessional too. A high percentage of the staff at PG&E are contract employees. The company lacks vision with no clear path to what is currently happening within and outside of the company; this comes from the top down. Management fosters a hostile, unprofessional and tension filled work environment that is not conducive for effective learning or a pleasant place to work. There are a number of “lifers” within the staff so beware as some of them are in management when they clearly are incapable of managing. Basic Management 101 tells us that a good manager will care for his/her employees’ well-being to ensure success for the team which means success for the company. (In no way, shape or form does this mean that management should act as a “babysitter,” however, some managers exist at the company who are extremely sensitive and incapable of managing a team as well as their own responsibilities because they don’t understand what it means to take on such adult tasks). This philosophy of managing a team by ensuring the team’s well-being, ie, trying to resolve tension and unprofessional behaviors among the team members is clearly not present at PG&E as management shies away from ensuring a pleasant and productive work environment for their employees which can ultimately result in a lack of good customer service and/or product whether it be for internal or external customers. There are contract employees who sit at their desks pretending to work when in fact they are constantly texting and reading on their cell phones even during meetings when cell phones ring, and management allows this or neglects to pay attention. Run as fast you can and do not seek employment here as the chaos continually gets worse as well as the toxic work environment. Many employees made the foregoing comment to me about the chaotic environment, “Welcome to PG&E.”

Advice to Management

Upper management needs to ensure a healthy and professional work environment exists for both PG&E employees and contract employees. This means ensuring people who are placed in management roles are capable of being managers. In addition, don't shy away from trying to resolve tensions among employees so that teams can be successful; hire well qualified and professional people and pay attention to potential candidates' behaviors during the interview process. Things need to be more efficient and streamlined otherwise the chaos and lack of vision will continue.
