How are the career development opportunities at Scottish Water?

Pros

Pension, annual leave, job security, training opportunities, opportunities for travel around Scotland, modern offices (mostly), publicly owned company trying to do the best for Scotland and its environment

Cons

Advancement opportunities can be limited, pay not rising at rate of inflation so wage stagnation is common. Very outdated bonus structure, lots of people leave for private sector jobs with better pay. When I started there were a lot more away days/training opportunities and a more social aspect to the job - this faded away over time as the company stopped providing overnight stays etc. for away days and social events. The way pay is structured/administered means wage stagnation is common. It was also common for persons to be appointed into roles without due diligence on making the role available for internal/external applications, which is disappointing for the public sector.

Advice to Management

Improve salaries/pay structure and bonus system, allow for more social events for staff and give people more of a realistic bonus that is actually tied to their performance and reflects the efforts they make.
