What is the salary like at Screwfix?

Pros

Better pay than most retail jobs. Easy work. You can work your way up the ladder quick if you want to, but most supervisors say it's not worth the extra agg for such a little pay rise. Once you're at assistant manager or higher you'll get better benefits.

Cons

Management tend to do as little as they possibly can. High staff turn over due to people getting fed up of either their management or just the job itself. Constantly changing the way in which stores are run and the procedures for jobs. SBS. (If youve worked at Screwfix you'll know how boring this is) No recognition for the effort you put in, especially when your manager, who will do as little as possible, gets thousands as a bonus and you get nothing.

Does Screwfix offer a weekly bonus?

Pros

Good Pay and bonuses if your perform well at ASM / BM level. Good culture and moral Fair level of payroll to actually run your store properly which I've had missing in previous companies. Easy to do, lots to learn and can be physically demanding.

Cons

If you want to progress past a BM role even with support from your Area Manager is tough. It's about who you know and not you suitability and skill set. Technology is far behind other companies and needs updating.

Advice to Management

Keep doing what your doing - Appreciate BMs for the work throughout covid, you rewarded everyone else but basically said BMs didn't work hard or arent worth it when we had to hold everything together and keep our teams engaged and on track through the toughest time I. Ever experienced in retail. Make recruitment for Field based and HO roles fair not just the person you have in mind.

What are other benefits and incentives like at Screwfix?

Pros

Great working environment, go home feeling like you have done a good days work, bonus is good and achievable if you work hard

Cons

Upper management can have a serious affect on the harmony and can change things at a moment's notice destroying months of hard work to create a settled environment in store

Advice to Management

You have got to the position you are in for a reason, utilise the skills you have to better your store managers instead of nationalising some in favour of favourites

Does Screwfix offer a yearly bonus?

Pros

Contracted hours are great at 37.5, on an early you can be home by 3.

Cons

Company used to be a big believer in work/life balance, I used to equally share the ‘bad’ shifts amongst myself and the management team, we all had one late a week, and we took turns doing weekends resulting in working 1 in 3. Now I have to work every other, as well as 6am starts and 8pm finishes multiple times during the week, messing your body clock up and resulting in feeling absolutely drained. I understand this is not bad in comparison to other companies, but if we are going to be like other companies then we will lose our work/life balance, one of the greatest things about screwfix. Promotions, there is no set path for a store manager to be promoted, no training plan, no targets to aim for, just have to keep going and keep asking. If you want progression past store manager this is not the company for you. Final thing company bonus, last year screwfix changed the bonus structure, so whilst screwfix as a business thrived, kingfisher did not, meaning that screwfix managers bonus was nowhere near what it has been, even though we delivered just as much and worked as hard, of course kingfisher still gave out bonus to their managers, even though their results were shocking.

Advice to Management

Let managers manage their shops, deal with managers that aren’t being fair, rather persecuting everyone. Bring back the old bonus structure, measure us on our success’ or failures. Develop a progression training plan for store managers
