What is the hiring process like at Specsavers?

Pros

Home time Lunchtime (if you don’t mind sitting like cattle, around a dirty table) Free eye tests, if they can be bothered to do them Free uniform

Cons

Rude management Incompetent payroll No help for people with health issues Discriminators of sexual orientation and personal appearance No progression Pittance of a wage 100% tolerance of bullying and abusive customers Don’t clean their optical tools Make patients buy glasses when they don’t need them Threats when you shop at other opticians No sick pay Smelly used uniform (Doesn’t fit anyone and have to have 4 sizes larger) Insults from directors Jobs opportunities are not advertised, purely given based on who is the closest relation to the manager Everyone who works there is on the verge of a mental breakdown due to poor morale Very little pay for what you are expected to do Expected to touch and use tools with bodily fluids on them Opticians who think they are beyond God Foul toilets Expected to clean the store (including bins, with chemical waste) without prior training Forced to clean chairs with urine and faeces on them, unless you stress you are not qualified Rumours spread by management Confidential employee information broadcasted by management to the entire store Opticians forced out of their jobs due to ill health Don’t get pregnant or they will make you feel guilty Not equal rights for common law marriage No HR department Incorrect pay and refuse to issue what you are owed Management scream at you if you say you are busy doing an important task No communication between management parties Dirty display glasses that are never thoroughly cleaned Told to force customers to pay for more expensive glasses and get shouted at if you don’t Asked to do stuff you haven’t been trained to do One rule for one, one rule for the other Depressing environment Apprentices sacked for not knowing customer service skills Not equal pay Pay rises for those who maintain outside relationships with management Unless you want to go to university, they don’t want to help you Employ anyone and everyone Not equal opportunities Staff expected to carry money to the bank, with no protection Expected to touch behind patients ears, whilst fitting glasses with no gloves or sterile gel No training given, even though this role requires a lot of patient contact both verbal and physical Staff infestation with head lice Elderly patients and disabled patients expected to climb upstairs No facilities for disabled employees/customers Shared sex toilets Expected to have breaks at ridiculous times Expect you to do everything for them and nothing for you Expect you to get to work before you get paid (Even if you are there ready to start before your shift) Forced into changing your shifts/hours unless you have a “valid” reason Terrible recruitment process Blunt management/directors Some directors won’t talk to you, they will scream at you Force you to use a social media platform and be in contact with them outside of work Not allowed to have water/tablets on the shop floor, yet customers are entitled to use the drinks machine Diabetics not allowed to keep sugar on the shop floor Heating over used during the summer months, resulting in ill staff Complaints and grievances not taken seriously If you have a problem with your director, there is nothing you can do except leave and email head office You MUST work weekends (Unless your face fits) Can never get the holiday you want, you have to queue for this when the new diary is issued Directors buy stuff for some staff and not others Expected to collect/order said coffee for everyone else except yourself (which is paid for out of the kitty) Bully you into working a longer notice period than your responsible for, unless you contact the manager when they are in a good mood If you smoke you won’t get sufficient breaks to do this Expected to work 5+ hours without a break On your feet all day Challenge doctor’s notes Forced to wear a different uniform, when other thinner staff are not Told you are a mess and have a face like a slapped bottom Won’t replace the uniform if it breaks due to a manufacturing fault Tell and advise people to leave, including the sick/mentally ill Make sick people feel pushed out You can’t transfer branches Management argue/personally attack you on the shop floor, in front of other members of staff Sanitary bins irregularly collected No compassionate leave Part-time discrimination Provide false information to customers Break the trading standards law People knock on the door, whilst you are in the toilet to see if you are free Very bright lighting and not a good working environment, considering it is an opticians Expected to touch ear devices with no protection Customers allowed in the staff room, with personal data and personal belongings Private tests crammed into a small room with several other patients, who could hear their sensitive information Forced to ask patients their ethnic origin Forced to push heavy machinery around, for days on end
