What is the retirement plan like at SumTotal?

Pros

Medical benefits, 401k and a paycheck

Cons

An incredibly dysfunctional organization. They recently demoted Practice Directors and a Vice President to do the work of an Engagement Manager instead of hiring a replacement. There have been an enormous number of staff departures in recent months and there does not appear to be any attempt to backfill for them, other than demoting more senior people to do the work. It appears to be a stop-gap measure to keep the lights on until the company is sold or shut-down.

Advice to Management

Look around and ask yourself why so many people have left on your watch.

How are senior leaders perceived at SumTotal?

Pros

Quality folks doing everything they can to manage clients and work with little to no plan. Can't say enough about those who have to save the day because of management. Decent healthcare coverage. Trying to implement scrum (finally). Decent amount of new clients last year (but still no bonus, again)

Cons

There is no CEO, though there is a relatively new executive chairman. Very reactive situation. No product vision or plan (only release to release). Lack of cohesion between departments (some better than others). Sales/account teams are too dependent on others to manage their clients and close deals. India team appear to be working outrageous hours. Relationship with Skillsoft hasn't played out and leadership seems clueless as to what to do.

Advice to Management

Be a SaaS company or not. Sitting in the middle causes a good deal of issues. If you can only close deals by selling future work, then you've already lost. There is something here, just figure it out quickly before my folks and clients leave.

How are the career development opportunities at SumTotal?

Pros

Competitive pay and benefits. Skillsoft provides industry standard pay, 401K and benefits.

Cons

Applicants beware of some pretty disgusting behavior by senior leadership at this company. I would not recommend joining SumTotal if you're looking to progress in your career and join an innovative company. SumTotal is barely hanging on and Management is back-stabbing.

Advice to Management

Be real and treat your employees better. Treat people professionally and don't just play favorites with a select few who have been with the company for years.
