What is the company culture like at Tesco?

Pros

Salary is alright compared to other grad schemes

Cons

No structure to grad scheme, nobody cares about you or your development. Very bad culture, everybody is lying to each other to get to the next stage in their career causing major work politics - very few get to the next stage, huge dropout rate of grads after just one year. Expect to have to jump through every hoop going and getting absolutely nothing in return. Long, unsociable hours. Say goodbye to every family event, weekend, Christmas and Bank Holiday

Advice to Management

Don't run a grad scheme if you have no intention of developing your grads

What is the hiring process like at Tesco?

Pros

You will learn a lot about all aspects of customer facing retail. Processes are designed well as far as managing stock and premises go. Moving within work level is easy due to the size and reach of the business in the UK.

Cons

Processes for hiring and promoting talent are not strong and despite better than industry average pay for leadership roles, Tesco does not seem to raise standards in this area. There is a strong ‘do as I say, not as a I do culture’. Very difficult to excel in an environment with such little trust. Some Senior leadership behave in a way which doesn’t set a good example for people at store manager or below. A highly political culture, which those who have worked their way up from shopfloor level are accustomed to, but not welcomed by anyone who has worked anywhere else.

Advice to Management

You can be a great company to work for if you could make it about doing the right thing, rather than just saying the right things. You will attract and retain high performers this way.
