What are meetings like at TransferWise?

Pros

You get loads of autonomy and influence over product and design. You won't be a code monkey.

Cons

This can be very very inconsistent depending on the team. In my experience I encountered clueless managers trying to further their own careers over the betterment of the team. There are quite a few living embodiments of the Dunning-Kruger effect! The environment started feeling a lot more corporate. The classic issues of 'waterfall masquerading as agile' have started to crop up. The number of meetings kept going up and don't expect to get any concentrated time to do work as Slack will ensure you're constantly distracted! The company is also in a bit of an identity crisis about what the product actually is. Ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers. None of them incorrect but not entirely correct either. The culture and values on paper look great but I'm finding it harder and harder to see those values in a practical way. It doesn't matter what you write on the wall but what you reward and who you promote. In my experience there was a massive incongruity between the written values and practical values. There is a certain kind of person that can succeed at TransferWise. The traits likely to do well are over confident, loud, loves to talk and can make themselves heard in a loud meeting. It's rather sad because here's a company that has literally everything going for it. It's solving a real problem with a product that seems to work (so far) and is profitable. The management seem to be caught like a rabbit in the headlights though and that could cripple the company's long term prospects.

Advice to Management

Start making some decisions! Autonomous teams are just a cop out from having to call some shots and ruffling a few feathers. People management is non existent. Spending some time on that would massively improve efficiency.

What is it like working with clients or customers at TransferWise?

Pros

easy to change roles, domains and teams within the company transparency on plans within the company, accessible financials proximity to the customers, direct impact to the product comprehensive interview process, high bar set for candidate's culture and motivation friendly environment and many company activities

Does TransferWise provide leads to sales teams?

Pros

- We don't have a dress code and you can be yourself - Pets are allowed - Environment is good - Teams are very supportive - Team leads are awesome and they will help you growing and finding the tools for you to become a better agent or become something else in the company - If you want you can grow in the company and change to a different departments very easily if you think there is something you would like to specialize in or if there is something you think you will be good with. You will always get support from the company, team leads and colleagues.

Cons

- The communication in between different teams is sometimes a little disorganized - Some parameters we have to comply as a customer support and are not reasonable, because if you want to help customers you need time to get the right solution (quality should matter more than quantity).

What is the work environment like at TransferWise?

Pros

Autonomous work environment, people who more often than not share a common goal and to get to be part of building a product that most costumers absolutely love and that genuinely help people around the world save lots of money

Cons

The very high level of autonomy can lead to teams at times acting selfishly. As long this is managed properly, there are ways to make it work but working this way is not for everyone

Advice to Management

You can infringe on the level of autonomy and centralise some decision making without abolishing autonomy altogether as it's not an absolute concept. A bit more structure would not be a bad thing
