      Store Assistant Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at ALDI (Glasgow, Scotland) in Apr 2019

      Interview

Applied online via a series of psychometric questions. These need to be answered bearing in mind Aldi's ethos of customer service and efficiency. Then there are several competency based questions asking for examples of good customer service and team work. If you've passed those, you'll then be invited to a group assessment at the store you've applied for. The one I attended felt disorganised - we had to wait near the checkouts prior to our allotted assessment time as there was nowhere else. Customers were asking what we were waiting for which doesn't help with nerves. There were 8 people in my group. We were then invited into the staff room by the area manager where we were asked to introduce ourselves. We were then asked what we knew about Aldi as company and then given a group scenario to work through. The process took around 30 minutes. We were then given further details about the role. The current rate of pay is £9.10 per hour and contracts are typically 25 hours per week - which despite being over the hourly living wage equates to £954 take home every month. We were then told anything over those 25 hours should be regarded as a bonus and also taking into the account Aldi expects flexibility from it's staff and seems to disparage students from applying. Who can afford to work for Aldi? How are you meant to survive on £954 a month and have a good quality of life? We were then told the next stage of the process if we were successful. This would be a one to one interview with the area manager. Following on would be an hour of shadowing in store with a manager and then the job would begin on the first Monday of the month as this is Aldi's preference for new employees. As we were being interviewed in April we could expect a start date, if successful, of June 2019. Why does this process take so long? The area manager could not answer this but appreciated our patience. I then received an email the next day saying I'd been unsuccessful: 'Due to the high volume of applications that we receive, we are unable to provide specific feedback to individual candidates. We would welcome applications from you in the future, however please note that for the next 12 months you will be unable to reapply.' Moving swiftly on.

      Question 2

Work as a group of 4 to solve a scenario. Early morning and a delivery needs to be put out in a certain time in order to fulfil targets. One of you is already on one till and three are working delivery. Half way through the delivery the store becomes very busy and another checkout needs to be opened. A customer rushes forward to the till and spills milk. What do you do?

Started as a group where we were educated on the history and benefits about working at ALDI, and were asked what we think working at ALDI is like. Seemed like a good company with fair pay. The individual interview itself only asked availability.

I was first givwn the opportunity to join a group assessment, which I passed. I was then asked to attend a face-to-face interview, in-store but the manager did not come into work that day and I was asked to rearrange the interview after waiting for over an hour.
