I applied online for an enterprise sales position. Roughly 2-3 weeks later, I received a call from an internal recruiter. The conversation focused on role responsibilities and a detailed walk through of my skillset and experience. Half way into the discussion, the recruiter determined that a different sales role would be a better fit. I was a bit confused because my background matched up well with the role I originally applied for. Recruiter went on to describe requirements and responsibilities of the other position, then asked me to review it on my own time and let her know if I was still interested. After reviewing, I emailed the recruiter and let them know I was still interested. I was then sent an assignment, which entailed building a business case for why a key prospect (redacting name) should partner with Amazon's Web Store instead of pursuing physical locations in new markets. I completed the assignment by deadline, which was 2 days after it was sent over. I was contacted by email about a week later asking to set aside 1 hour for a phone interview with a department manager. The interview ended up being with a manager who worked in sales but a different department. All questions were fairly standard, nothing unexpected or overly challenging. When I asked the interviewer to provide details around salary structure or "day in the life" of a person in this role, he said he wasn't sure and would leave that to a hiring manager. The call lasted roughly 45 minutes. Next day I received an email asking me to fly out to Seattle for an in person interview. This is where things got interesting. As other here have said, the onsite interview lasts about 6 hours. I was there 11a - 5p and spoke with 7 people in total. I was provided an itinerary in advance which showed 6 people and back to back interviews without breaks. Once there, it turned out the schedule had changed and one of the interviewers didn't show up as originally planned. I was pulled out of the interview room after speaking with 3 people and was asked to wait in the main lobby. Apparently, you're not allowed to be left unsupervised for any period of time while in the building. After a 45 minute wait I was brought back in and was in back to backs the rest of day. So what were the questions and interviewers like? The interviewers were all senior managers and all except 2 worked in sales. All had accomplished work backgrounds and advanced degrees. One thing that struck me was how robotic everyone appeared, with almost no visible personality. A lot of the questions revolved around data and very few about sales strategy or tactics, even though I was there for a sales role. I have interviewed people before and the type of questions being asked of me are usually meant for analysts. Towards the end of the day, I tried to inject some very lighthearted humor into a couple of my answers and that went over like a lead balloon. I asked one of the interviewers how he saw my skillset and experience fitting in or benefiting the role, he said they interview for a cultural fit over anything else. To that end, I was not asked a single, what I would consider "cultural" question by any of the interviewers. It was all about data, the standard risk taking and overcoming challenges questions. At Amazon, data is the culture. As there was 6 hours of conversation, I could provide a lot more details. (TL;DR) Instead, here is a summary of key takeaways: There is no such thing as a work-life balance at Amazon. You will be expected to put in 70+ hour weeks, like everyone else. Turn over appears to be very high due to burn out. You will learn a lot as everyone there is extremely knowledgeable and visionary. It is a Type A personality environment, if you are not ready, you will be eaten alive. Resources are scarce. You have to be a self-starter as there is almost no training provided (at least in the role I interviewed for). Managers appear to be in meetings all day every day - if you have ever worked in that type of environment you know what to expect. Lastly, if you don't perform you will be out of there faster than you can say "same day shipping." Overall, it was a great experience but I would have turned down the offer.
