    Product Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in London, England
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Badoo (London, England) in September 2016.

    Interview

    First Round:
Head of Product (Background and Fit)
2 Product Managers (Analysis, Problem Solving, Real Data)

    Second Round:
Assignment was given to provide solutions to problems related to females in the dating space

    Final Round | Full Day:
Discussion is heavily based on your assignment
    Meet with Entire Product Team
Meet with Head of Engineering and Tech Leads
Meet with UX and Design Leads
    Meet with Co-Founders and CEO

Process was fairly long and laborious. Meeting 14 people in one day was exhausting and repetitive. Concerns were raised when I realised the entire product team are comprised of males and was asked by one Product Manager if I could handle working in an all male environment. This is something which I feel Badoo needs to address across the board. One interviewer was particularly rude and questioned if I would need a "hand to hold" or a "shoulder to lean on" given my previous job history. Have yet to receive any helpful feedback with regards to my interview apart from that I was well liked but was too junior for the role.

    Interview Questions

    • Describe how agile works
How would you feel working in an all male environment

Thanks for your feedback on your interview experience. We apologise for the process taking 4 weeks - this is an anomaly largely down to the summer holiday season!

We have taken onboard your feedback, and have implemented changes to our final interview day to ensure there is no unnecessarily duplication. We are conscious of diversity in our work environment and are currently undertaking focused recruitment initiatives to address this.

We appreciate the time you have taken both to interview and provide your comments, and hope you may reconsider Badoo one day in future.

    Senor MicroStrategy Developer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in London, England
    No Offer
    Positive Experience
    Average Interview

    Application

I applied in-person. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Badoo (London, England) in August 2016.

    Interview

I applied online, via LinkedIn. The initial responce was quite fast. Few e-mail and an introduction chat with HR member. Next stop was a Skype interview with the MicroStrategy team. We had a regular talk of what I did, what I know. Next stop was a visit in the HQ (UK). Badoo took care of everything: flights, taxis and hotel. Everything was good there. The visit consisted of a tour of the office with HR and then 4 technical focused talks. My understanding was those were technical talks with an open question "do I fit the team". After those meetings I was informed I would be contacted on Monday or Tuesday. Everything went south from here. No contact till Wednesday, when I dropped the HR an e-mail. On Thursday, I got a short, standard e-mail saying: "We're not interested, thank you for participating." from a generic, no-respond e-mail address. To be honest, I was expecting a call or at least a little longer information saying what I did wrong, what were my short commings, etc. Somewhere between the lines I got the feeling I was too cocky... For anyone going for an interview with Badoo, I would recomend to be honest, humble and treat the interview as an corporate business, not a friendly chat.

    Badoo Response

    22 Aug 2016

Thanks for your feedback, and we appreciate your ongoing interest in the company.

We are sorry you feel you didn't receive sufficient feedback after your interview - accordingly we've reviewed the response sent to you post interview, and unfortunately cannot agree that you were sent a generic standard email. We have provided quite specific feedback about why we were not progressing to an offer, and this was done within 3 working days of your team interview. We will continue to strive to make our feedback loop even more timely.

We wholeheartedly agree with your recommendation for future interviewees at Badoo to be honest and humble though - these are indeed qualities we look for in all future Badoo employees.

    Human Resources Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in London, England

    Negative Experience
    Average Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Badoo (London, England) in May 2016.

    Interview

The interview was conducted by the current HR Manager who is about to leave the company and the Talent Acquisition Manager. On arrival I was shown around the very impressive Soho-based office before meeting my interviewers. I haven't had any update or feedback following the interview (in spite of chasing) but I have assumed I haven't been successful (no news is usually bad news). Lack of feedback is the main reason why I am dissatisfied and disappointed with this interview experience. I only read the Glassdoor reviews after the interview but a number of questions I was asked made more sense to me after seeing these reviews. My impression is that Badoo may be looking for an HR person who will be comfortable with carrying out the decisions of senior management without questioning them or agreeing with them.

    Interview Questions

    • Have you ever had to carry out an action you personally disagreed with?   Answer Question

    Badoo Response

    15 Jul 2016

We're sorry you feel this way about your interview experience, and have taken the time to investigate as we pride ourselves on providing a quality candidate experience. Our records indicate any candidates who were not progressed were informed within 48 hours - any candidates outside that window were still under consideration.

It was explained to all candidates that latter stages of the interview process would take some time due to constrained availability of interviewers involved, and all candidates who were not selected for these stages were given detailed feedback as they were eliminated from selection for second and third round.

The highlighted interview question was asked in the context of a suite of questions designed to assess a candidate's awareness of the challenges of maintaining professional separation from close personal relationships with other employees in a small, close-knit company.

Thanks again for your interest in Badoo.

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Badoo (London, England) in March 2016.

    Interview

It was a exercise to be done in your spare time, followed by a set of interviews in their office. The exercise was:

It's not a strictly timed code test but ideally you shouldn't spend more than 3-4 hours to complete it.
You should aim to develop a working solution with the simplest possible user interface.
Pay special attention to the **** algorithm.
Our guys also like to see clean, well-structured code and if you have time - it would be nice to add some unit tests.

I implemented the exercise within that time frame with its GIT, code structure, the working algorithm unit tested.

    And the response is:
    Good
    - Actual conversion seems ok
    - Used external strings

    Bad
    - Reads data in main thread
    - Not using big decimals
    - Transactions are totaled incorrectly, the values are switched

Ok that I didn't used big decimals, but the algorithm was allright. And threads? No body told anything about threads. And that I used external strings? I think that I used other stuff like appcompat or had a good structure or unit testing...

If you do the exercise be aware that they are evaluating other stuff a part of the things that they ask for!!!

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Badoo in June 2015.

    Interview

A recruiter contacted me, she was very friendly and very helpful with how should i be prepare for the interview and explain me very well the process of the company for hiring.
First, i was schedule a skype interview, but the manager never showed up, we had to re-schedule for another week, again recruiter was very nice and polite with the situation. Then, i finally had the skype interview and things started VERY COLD: "i'm xxxxxx, this interview takes 30m, first tell me about your cv (...) second, technical questions". The questions were very open so i just had to talk and talk about a specific topic or explain something, and i responded very well, except for 2-3 details. I was rejected, because i didn't answer as they wanted to, if i'm explaining something and the interviewer is not sure or have doubts about my answer i should expect feedback like: "can you complement your answer?", "i'm not sure about that... ", instead, i was getting: "yes, that right", "very well!". Interview ended almost abruptly, exactly 30m after we started, and in the middle of a question.
Apparently, they were not looking for a Computer Engineer, not even a Senior Developer, but a Rockstar Developer, which is perfectly fine, so, if you are not a "Rockstar", i would recommend to not waste your time interviewing at Badoo.

I've been here for about 6 months! Badoo is very multi-cultural and it's probably the best place I've worked for several reasons. The talent here is incredible, we seem to have a really high bar, when it comes to hiring, so I can go to any colleague/team in another department and expect a good job/good answer. It can be really frustrating when this isn't the case. I've been in 7 companies previously in my full time roles, in different cities. Previous companies, I've been lucky to have a fruit bowl and cereal. Here we have 3 meals a day cooked by some good chefs, fully stocked fridges all day for whatever you want and parties etc. It's just really good, they really look after you. They even have a medicine cabinet and vitamins etc. That makes me laugh because I've never had that before, never heard of it actually. All our equipment like desks, chairs and computers are all top notch as well. Even though 500 people work here, you end up dealing with the CTO or CFO etc, no matter what you're level. It very much feels like a 'start-up' but it's actually a sizeable and quickly growing company. All senior staff are pretty much approachable and I've seen people get promoted here already etc, I've also seen people move departments if they've wanted to. Turnover seems very low to be honest, some people have left while I've been here but 90% of them had been here for 4+ years. I believe that's quite low for the tech industry! I genuinely enjoy working here and I think most people would. Salaries, bonuses and perks etc seem above average compared to most places and anyone else I know in other industries.” – Full Review
