      Veterinary Technician, RVT Interview

      16 Dec 2014

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Banfield Pet Hospital

      Interview

I applied at several locations and had three interviews and one working interview. The first interview was by a manager. The questions were behavioral, for the most part. I was asked how I handled difficult clients and how my relationships were with coworkers. I got a call two days later. The manager told me I interviewed very well, but they had to close the position. They didn't hire anyone. The second interview was with another manager. Like the previous interview, I was asked questions on how I handled difficult clients. I came back for a working interview. Two weeks afer that, I still had not heard back. When I called to inquire about the position, I was told they were still interviewing and had not made a decision. They went with an assistant instead of an RVT. The third interview was odd. I was supposed to meet with the manager, but she had an emergency. Instead, the shift lead and a DVM from another location met with me. They did most of the talking, and asked me about how I handled previous difficult work situations.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Banfield Pet Hospital (Rossford, OH) in Feb 2018

      Interview

TLDR Version: Lengthy but thorough interview process. Applied online, then phone Interview, then an in-person Interview, and then job shadowing. Ultimately, I was offered the position and accepted. Post-hire I had to submit to a background check and received new hire paperwork digitally. Long Version: Application Process - I applied online and initially had trouble getting my application to go though. Very frustrating and had to contact tech support. However, once I could get it to go through, the rest of the application process was simple. Phone Interview - After I had submitted my online application, I was contacted about a week later and asked to have a phone interview. During the phone interview I was asked various questions such as why I wanted to work for Banfield, If I had ever worked for Banfield, PetSmart or MARS before, etc. The manager was very nice and said she was impressed with my answers and asked if I would like to come in for a face to face interview in a few days. The whole interview lasted about 10 mins. In-Person Interview - I arrived about 10 mins early. I had to wait a little longer than expected but it is a busy vet practice so no big deal. When they were ready, the hiring manager, the shift manager and I went into an empty exam room to conduct the interview. They were both very kind telling me about the hospital, how many dr's, techs and assistants they had, a brief history of Banfield, and how the hospital is run while explaining that it is a nationwide chain. They asked me several questions about where I used to work and how my experience there could best fit this practice. There was also a behavioral evaluation with no right or wrong answers, just a personality test of sorts to see if I would fit in with the culture of Banfield. Mid-way through the behavioral evaluation the manager asked if I would like to come do a job shadowing as the next step of the interview process. Job Shadowing - About 2 or 3 days later I was invited to observe a veterinary technician for several hours and shadow them, asking any questions I may have along the way. The practice was very busy (which is why they were hiring) but it seemed to be a controlled chaos and everyone knew what they were doing. During my shadowing I observed routine physical exams as well as surgeries. It appeared that the animals were in very good hands and everyone was extremely competent. The doctors on staff were very friendly and engaging asking me thought provoking questions about anesthesia protocol and what I was used to while encouraging me to ask questions myself. My visit ended just before lunch with enough time to observe the team huddle. I was blown away by the amount of communication and teamwork exhibited in my short 2-hour stay. I notified the hiring manager immediately that I loved what I saw during my visit. I was offered a full time RVT position and graciously accepted the same day. Post Offer Acceptance: Through email correspondence I had to submit to a tax-credit survey (Questions like "Are you a disabled veteran? Does your family receive TANF benefits? etc.) and then shortly after, I was emailed an electronic consent for a background check. Overall, my experience was extremely positive if not time consuming. Initially it was frustrating trying to apply with the Banfield website which I had problems with, but the rest of the interview process went smoothly.
