      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One in Aug 2011

      Interview

CapOne has a very structured recruiting process. HR initially contacts you for a quick phone screen followed by an online quant/verbal/behavioral assessment which is like a mini SAT and takes about 1.5hrs to complete. A practice test is provided which is a big help, especially if it's been some time since undergrad. You must score well on this in order to proceed. HR will notify you within a day if you pass the test, and if so, schedule a phone call with a hiring mgr or two. If that goes well, then CapOne will invite you for an onsite visit at their McLean HQ. The onsite visit is an all day affair and includes multiple job fit, behavioral and case interviews. Each behavioral interview includes 3 questions requiring you to provide a detailed explanation of a situation in which you had to work with difficult people, multi-task, respond to changes, persuade others, etc. The case interview is very similar in format to the sample provided in the online careers section. Not only is it important to answer the case correctly, but you must also walk the interviewer through your reasoning. They move quickly on a decision and will usually let you know within 2 days.

      Question 1

Case interview: Cap One is considering on whether to offshore its customer service call center. Should they keep this platform in house or outsource it? Various assumptions are provided.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (Richmond, VA)

      Interview

Must answer 2 case studies and 2 behavioral type interviews. Met with 4 different people. You stay in a small room and they come to you. After all the interviews you go to lunch with someone on the team and if you pass then you get a final interview with the hiring mgr.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (McLean, VA) in Mar 2022

      Interview

      1) Starts with a two part online assessment with a mathematical analysis on a small business case, not timed but they want you to finish as quick as you can. Followed up by a questionnaire assessing your cultural fit. 2) Phone screening with a recruiter where you go over the basics: Experience, why CapOne, salary expectations, etc. 3) “Power Day” with two behavioral interviews and 2 case studies that will last 4 hours. They outline what to expect for both. Behavioral was STAR format and case studies were about P&L/Break-Even and Interest Rates where you have to think out loud through your thought processes. 4) Final stage is really a formality where you would have a quick convo with the potential hiring manager. Overall, it’s a long, cumbersome process and it’ll really make you evaluate whether you want to be apart of CapOne(not in a bad way).

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

“Tell me about a time when” questions revolving around: Leadership, challenges, competing priorities, implementing change, influencing, conflict, etc..

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (Washington, DC) in Dec 2021

      Interview

Phone screen with recruiter, make sure you qualify for the position. Then "Power Day" - 2 behavioral interviews and 2 case study interviews. The behavioral interviews are 45 minutes each and the case studies are an hour. I passed one case study, but not the other (started out well, but then struggled halfway through). Did not get an offer. Afterwards, the recruiter told me in so many words that I did not pass one of the cases so that's basically why I didn't get the job. So the case studies seem to have more weight than the behaviorals.
