Interview
I was contacted by this company about a position they believed would be a strong fit for me. Initially, I declined because the salary did not meet my requirements. They later came back and told me they could work with my compensation expectations, though it would be for a role more aligned with my resume.
As the interview process moved forward, I started noticing several red flags. Still, I was willing to see it through to the end. In my first interview, I met with one of the directors. I was told that the position had been downgraded from a Director role to a Manager role because I did not have formal “managerial” experience — even though my resume clearly demonstrates leadership and oversight responsibilities. Despite the downgrade in title, the job duties remained at the Director level. That immediately stood out to me.
The interviews themselves went well and focused primarily on behavioral questions and my professional background. In the next round, I spoke with a senior leader. That conversation felt more like a general discussion rather than a deep dive into the role. During that interview, there was noticeable hesitation when I asked about the salary range. Compensation wasn’t discussed in detail because we had already aligned on the minimum I was willing to accept. Later, I was told that the minimum offer they were “guessing” would likely fall below what I had previously stated — another red flag.
I was then informed that I would be moving to the final round. However, that changed abruptly when someone who had previously declined the opportunity decided they now wanted the position. Instead of allowing both of us to complete the final round, I was told I would no longer be considered. The reason given was that there was prior history between that applicant and the hiring leader.
The moral of the story for me is this: sometimes it’s not just about merit or qualifications. In certain situations, it’s less about what I know and more about who someone knows.
