The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Etsy (Boston, MA)
Interview
Nice people. Structured top heavy with tight controls, so manager interview was mostly all about them. Leadership is based out of US so time zones seemed difficult. Meetings run over and they seemed offended to need to end the call. Main concern — the recruiter and what different leadership said contradicted often. Otherwise, great recruiter and mixed bag for developers. Again, was told some people would shadow certain interviews that weren’t there, so more contradictions.
I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Etsy (New York, NY) in Nov 2017
Interview
Three phone interviews, one with recruiter, two with engineers, one large homework assignment, and one long in-person interview. Total interview process took about 2 1/2 months. Communication with recruiter(s) during this process was slow, but OK.
Phone interviews were about average, though there seemed to be a fair amount of disconnect about the job description. The position communicated to me was for a cloud infrastructure engineer, though the engineers I talked to on the phone were mixed between "we're going to the cloud" and "we might go to the cloud".
The homework assignment was actually pretty fun. Lots of questions around experience with administration and some cloud stuff, along with 2 coding/scripting assignments.
The in-person interview process was quite poor. The general disconnect was even more apparent with one person on the infrastructure team not acknowledging a move to the cloud and instead focusing on Linux sys-admin questions, specific to RedHat distributions. I was also asked to bring my laptop for coding questions but instead was asked to solve a coding problem on the whiteboard.
At the end of the process, I received an informal email stating my skills did not match the position well enough. Based on the interviews I assume they want someone with more Linux administration experience because they are unsure about actually moving to the cloud, which is not what was represented during the initial interview.
