      Editor Interview

      3 Feb 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Fodors

      Interview

I completed a phone screen with the parent company's HR, then was asked to complete an editing test over the following week. This included editing and fact-checking several restaurant and hotel reviews as well as reading one of their print guides, explaining what they do well and providing suggestions for improvement, pitching an entirely new print guide, and then writing a separate essay on what travel means to me. Needless to say this all took quite a bit of time, but after submitting the various materials I never heard back, not even a confirmation that they were received. Not only did I end up providing numerous ideas and pitches for free, I also had purchased one of their guides to complete the exercise so I contributed to their sales! I'm very disappointed when situations like this seem to take advantage of candidates to gather work without compensation.
