      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at GameStop (Oxford, AL) in Dec 2010

      Interview

The interview is conducted by the Store Manager. He will ask basic questions about video games such as: What video games to do you play?, Do you keep up with current releases?, Do you know what FPS, RTS, MMO, RPS, etc stands for?, What systems are you familiar with?, ect. Most people go into a Gamestop interview expecting to talk only about how awesome videos games are and what skulls you have on Halo. Do not do this. Definately show an enthusiasium for video games and the industry as a whole, but concentrate on customer service and sales goals. This is a retail job and what the manager wants to hear is that you can communicate with customers and sale the product. Very little of your time will actually be spent answering questions about specific games. Most people just want to know if you have played the game and would you recommend it. Be prepared to answer technical questions about various systems. Customers call on a frequent basis needing help with initial setup and basic troubleshooting. Being familiar with the systems you sell is much more important than playing every single game. All you really need to know about a game is what category it falls in to (sports, adventure, military shooter, etc). More in depth knowledge can come later. Gamestop employees are typically very laid back, but you will be expected to make sales goals and keep the store organized. Slacking is not tolerated at all. This can be a fun job that has many career advancement opportunites if you are willing to put in the effort.
