Job ad was posted on a research community's email listserv. Initially, I submitted my cover letter and resume to the HR department of the company. About two weeks after my submission, a hiring manager emailed me to arrange a phone interview. The phone interview was with the hiring manager and a senior research staff, and it took about forty minutes. One third of the questions from the interviewers were about my academic background and research experience. Another one third were about my recent research publications and the related techniques used in the research. The last one third were about their plans and the fitting of my qualifications to them such as grant proposal writings, work authorization, etc. The technical questions were advanced, but they were not like fine-detailed paper-and-pencil style; rather, the questions were about kind of broad hands-on experiences in advanced techniques of the state of the art. My perception of the interviewers were very good.
