How would I motivate an employee who was not performing his

  or her duties? What was the most difficult situation I ever encountered as a manager?

I stated that as a manager, I would have a one-on-one conference with the employee before taking it to the next level. I said that sometimes more can be achieved with minor performance deficiencies with a conference before continuing the process for possible termination. I also stated that of course, if it was a minor offense, this one-on-one conference may not be applicable.
