Before I applied, I emailed asking about the salary range of the position since this would have been a new industry for me and likely a step down from previous senior positions I have held. I had no way to gauge if this position would even meet my baseline financial requirements. It took three exchanges and the hiring manager still didn't answer the salary range question. Instead, she asked for my last salary and my resume, before she would reveal this basic information from her company. Although I felt overqualified for the position (which is why I asked the salary question in my first email), I took the time to put together a cover letter and modify my resume slightly. All in all, it was not a mutual fit and I still don't know the salary range of the position. :-) It's not a huge issue, but if I had just received the information I asked for up front, it would have saved us both a lot of wasted time and energy.
