The first impression wasn't bad, given that they followed up quickly after I applied (online). I was asked to choose a time slot. and an online interview (via Zoom) soon followed.
The conversation went very well from my perspective. We discussed my work history and the tech-stack I'm familiar with. I was given a good overview of their platform and we briefly discussed the product features (I made as many as possible questions, with the limitation that I wasn't talking with a technical person, thus all my questions were limited to "business level").
I was promised an interview with the CTO the following week. Given that I didn't hear back from them after over a week, I sent a (very polite and tactful) e-mail asking about the promised interview. Now it's been two weeks since that and I still didn't hear back from them.
I don't think that I deserve such treatment. I have all the skills they require for the position, plus an extensive portfolio with samples of my work that prove that I do possess these skills.
I've been living in English speaking countries for almost 10 years now. Even though English is not my first language, people who I talk to (native speakers) always compliment my English ("Wow! Your English is perfect!"). I couple of times people thought that I was American. I barely have an accent.
I'm (apologizing in advance for my lack of modesty) well spoken and articulate. I would understand the treatment if I was rude, arrogant, unqualified or spoke broken English.
An explanation could have been that I asked too much in regards to salary (but I don't think so, given that I asked for the average rate in Europe, which is way lower than the average rate in the U.S.).
Another explanation could have been politics. They asked me if I would agree to move to the U.S. if things would work out in the long term (they would hire me initially as a contractor).
I said that "I would love to, despite the current political climate in the U.S.". She said "Oh, you mean our president.", to which I replied ("He's a strange guy [*soft giggle*]. He's making more difficult for foreign workers trying to get H1B visas [*soft smile*].").
So maybe they got upset because I'm not a Donald Trump supporter... Go figure...
By the way, even though I don't support Trump, I don't have bad feelings towards the old dude... Watching this crazy feller in real life is almost as funny as watching the TV show "Curb Your Enthusiasm"... But, having said that, I just hope that he will not destroy human civilization... lol.
