      Product Designer Interview

      8 Apr 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Paycom

      Interview

Process: Recruiter call, interview and portfolio presentation with 2 team leads, 3-part take home [(1) analyze a website, (2) design a mobile app, (3) design a different desktop app], final interview with supervisors, decision/negotiation. -- I finished all rounds for the Product Designer Interview process with a 3-part take-home only for them to tell me that they wanted to change the job description at the end to include more years of experience which would place me on an Associate Level, which is a 20-30k pay difference. If I had known from the start, my expectations would have been set properly. However, I was interviewed and assessed at a higher level. The offer came down solely to years of experience rather than skill. How can you boast having a growth-minded culture when you base an offer on years of experience over acquired skill level? The take-home is a lot too and borderline unethical. They want you to finish it within 72 hours. Most product design interviews with a take-home require you to design/redesign 1 thing, but they require you to design 2 separate apps which are similar to their existing products. This felt like spec work, especially because there's no presentation. I was just required to submit my work and full documentation and wait to see if I made it to the final round. I did get to the final round and answered additional questions they had, but it still felt exploitative for free work. No disclaimer or anything like that at all in the process. I interviewed for mid-level, and they liked my skills but decided to offer me associate level solely for years of experience even though I proved in the interview process that I could deliver for the level I interviewed for. If they're okay with changing the description on me like that at the end of the interview process, I can only imagine how bad it would be if I was working there. I decided to go with a different company who offered me more than I asked for because they saw my value, and I can see how people-first they are through their actions, not just words.
