      Cashier Interview

      10 Apr 2011
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at PetSmart in Mar 2011

      Interview

When I initially applied online I called after 48 hours and was told they weren't hiring. However, 2-3 weeks after that I was called and asked to come in for an interview later that week. It was a group interview of about six other people being interviewed by two managers. Questions were basic, pretty much it was basically you showing off how professional and polite you are. You don't have to have a lot of experience; for example, I had no cashier experience and only 3 months of total work experience (not in customer service), but they hired me as cashier. Later I was trained with both a bather and a pet care associate who had no previous work experience. But we all had a passion for pets and it showed, and we were polite and well dressed (for college aged kids). A few days later they called to say that they did want to have a second interview, and that they would call me back to schedule it. They took awhile calling back and I was the one who had to call them a few times before my second interview was scheduled. I had my second interview two or three weeks after the first. It was basically the same as the first interview but this time it was 1:1 with the store manager. Both interviews ask you to describe yourself (mention your pets and animal experience!) and situational questions. Second interview went great, I could tell I was hired before I was offered the job. If they want you, they offer you the job after the second interview. If you finish the second interview and they say they'll call you back that usually means you didn't get the job. Since my second interview was on the weekend they asked my to come in the following Monday to pick up the drug test information. I went straight from Petsmart to the company doing the drug tests. I passed, but they did not call to confirm my pass. I called them exactly one week after I took the test and was told I passed the drug test and would be called back early the next week. I was not called and so by Thursday I called them and was asked to come in the next day (Friday). That Friday is when I filled out my new hire paperwork and began on the workbook and training videos. Workbook and training videos took two five-hour days. There were a lot of "store activities" in the book where we basically got up and found where products were in the store, became familiar with store brands, and we got to practice catching crickets and feeder fish. Cashier training is supposed to take two days with a trainer and by the third day I should be working on my own. Everybody is really friendly and has a real passion working with pets, even the cashiers. It took two months from the day I first applied to my first paid day. Interview process took 4-6 weeks before my first day. I was told that they were short-staffed with management and that they were sorry for all the delays. I assume it doesn't usually take that long, but it can. Most shifts are five hour shifts, though I'm told there is an occasional eight hour shift if they are short on people.

      Interview

Short and sweet. Offered job same or next day. Single interview and consisted of easy to answer questions and was with 2 managers, at the same time. Job was amazing! I only left due to a major car accident that caused a horrible back surgery.
