      Developer Interview

      31 Oct 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Toronto, ON
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Prodigy Education (Toronto, ON) in Jul 2019

      Interview

Their process for tech roles seems to be somewhere between 4 and 6 steps long, with a mix of online testing, phone, video, and in person. When I asked them questions about their platform, they seemed a little unprepared, and I got the sense there's a fair amount of requirements churn and confusion over direction. Not a deal breaker, but something to take into consideration. If you prefer working somewhere with a more stable, mature development process and toolchain, this might not be a fit for you. A person who thrives in a make it up as we go along environment would likely be right at home. The one word of caution I'd have for other applicants is that this organization is notorious for doing unofficial reference checks, and for someone who doesn't want their current employer to find out that they're job hunting, there's a risk that gossip spilling out of Prodigy could endanger that. I found out they'd been talking to 2nd and even 3rd degree randos on LinkedIn. These were people who didn't know me and were weirded out to be asked. That kind of reference check is in a legal grey area and nowadays considered by larger companies to be unreliable, but Prodigy hasn't twigged to that yet, apparently. I was glad to have other options, because this wouldn't have been a fit for me.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Describe a time you made a mistake. What is the difference between SQL and noSQL? Show us some code you are proud of. What are advantages and disadvantages of microservices architecture? Design a React component.

Thank you for taking the time to review your interview experience and provide feedback. As a company that is continuously growing and learning we appreciate the feedback, as it teaches us how to improve. In regards to our interview process for this role, we do have five steps that candidates have to move through. This includes an assessment to ensure that candidates have the technical skills to be successful in the role. As we are a start-up with 300 + employees, strategies, processes and work environments are constantly improving and scaling. Most candidates find this to be an exciting challenge, as it allows them to be apart of the growth within the company. When a candidate has been successful at all stages of the interview process, we extend an offer. This offer is conditional upon a reference check. Only once the offer is extended and signed do we conduct a reference check. These references are provided by the candidates and are then contacted via Xref - a third-party contractor. Only our HR team has access to these references checks, keeping the privacy of the candidate. Based on your feedback, we have updated our interview training sessions with our hiring managers to include a section around reference checks and how not to use Linkedin as a referencing tool. We have also reached out to all recruiters and talent partners to connect with hiring managers at their weekly meetings to discuss how important candidate privacy is. Again, thank-you for your feedback and we wish you the very best in your future career!

      Interview

Prodigy education ghosted me after they set up the interview. I sat in their zoom call alone for 20 minutes. No follow up or explanation. Very disrespectful. I don't know about the rest of the interview.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Prodigy Education (Bedford, NS)

      Interview

Initial communications were fine as the recruiter was punctual and asked some good questions. I moved on to the technical challenge and did a good job, passing all unit tests presented me. After reviewing my results I was told I’d be moving on to further interviews and congratulated for getting this far. In the next interview the interviewer was significantly late and did not extend the time for the discussion. They stated they didn’t get to finish asking the questions they needed to and that a follow up conversation was needed to finish the process. Several days later I was told that they decided I wasn’t a good fit based on a combination of the results from the coding challenges (that were previously reviewed and congratulations given...) and their impressions from the segment of the discussion that didn’t even take place yet...
