Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Science and Technology Facilities Council (Didcot, England) in December 2019.

Interview

After being invited to an assessment center standard online psychometric tests (and personality test) were completed online before attending.
The first day started at approximately 2pm. This started off with paper work (e.g. expense claims) and a welcome talk. This then led into a group activity. After this there was a further talk about the work STFC do followed by a three course meal. The seating plan was arranged so you would be seated near your interviewers for the next day. The day ended at approximately 8pm. Accomodation at STFC's own Cosners house (in Abingdon) was provided.

The second day started with a taxi ride to the Rutherford laboratory, starting at either 8am or 11am depending on the group you were allocated. The group's depend on the distance you need to travel to get home with those further to travel starting earliest.

This day consisted of a 30 minute personality interview, a 1 hour technical interview and a tour of the office, no tour of the experiments down at the site. The department's you would tour depends on which departments shortlisted your application, this could be anything from one to three departments.

The personality interview consisted of questions such as interests, examples of team work and results from the psychometric tests.

The technical interview asked questions relevent to the department you were interviewing for in addition to university project work.
Questions about low pass filters and digital logic/VHDL seemed common across the board. Other questions were tailored to the application. I felt they were looking for a deep understanding of how they worked. Questions should be simple if 1st/2nd year content is fresh in your mind.

A response within two weeks was promised in the welcome talk but this did not happen. Approximately 6/7 weeks after the assessment center for a decision and the expense claim to paid. The job was relisted on Gradcracker prior to returning a verdict.
