In my former Hospice position, was there any on-call responsibility?
1 Answers↳
I answered honestly, that there was no on-call responsibility. One time the on-call RN called after hours and asked me to help her with a death as she felt uncomfortable doing it alone and I went out and backed her up because I felt no team member should be out there alone feeling uncomfortable. She had never asked before or after this situation but if she had, I probably would have gone again. If it began to become a regular event, then I would need to talk with the Director about strategizing the team as a whole to meet her need. Less

How do you help Residents or family members who are not prepared for their loved one to begin hospice care and become angry and verbally aggressive toward you?

I would imagine that the Resident about to receive palliative cares would be fully compliant with hospice, as we cannot provide them a service they are refusing. But family members tend to be more verbally aggressive because they are scared and still know what to expect. I can't claim to know why any one acts as they do, only sympathize. As a social worker, I have learned to take my job seriously. But I do not take anything personally. Making this distinction allows me to have a greater emotional buffer, so anything said to me can be responded to with open minded clinically appropriate ways to help the angered ones de-escalate.
